As Nigeria joined the rest of the world to commemorate International Workers’ Day on May 1, 2025, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the hardworking men and women of Edo State, commending their unwavering dedication, resilience, and commitment to the development of the state. In a special address delivered at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Governor Okpebholo lauded the efforts of organized labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the entire Edo workforce, describing them as the engine room of progress.
The governor’s message was delivered in a lively atmosphere filled with solidarity songs, cultural displays, and parades by various labour unions. Thousands of workers from public and private sectors gathered to celebrate the day, which also served as a platform to highlight the challenges facing the Nigerian worker, as well as the achievements made in the last year.
A Salute to Workers’ Sacrifice
Governor Okpebholo, addressing the enthusiastic crowd, praised the role of workers in nation-building, particularly in Edo State, where he acknowledged the significant contributions of civil servants, teachers, health workers, artisans, and other professionals.
“Today, we celebrate the strength and sacrifice of our workers. Your resilience in the face of economic difficulties, your patience in times of delayed reforms, and your commitment to excellence despite limited resources are what keep Edo State running,” he said.
He went further to highlight that without the dedication of the Edo workforce, the many strides his administration has achieved in infrastructure, education, health, and public service reforms would not have been possible.
“We are proud of your tireless service. We do not take your efforts for granted. You are the true heroes of our democracy and development,” he added.
Appreciation for Labour Leaders
Governor Okpebholo also extended warm commendations to the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their continued engagement and constructive dialogue with the state government. He praised their role in maintaining industrial peace and promoting workers’ welfare while calling on them to continue their cooperation in the interest of collective progress.
“We have enjoyed a healthy and productive relationship with labour unions in Edo State. Through mutual respect and understanding, we have navigated complex issues without confrontation. I thank the NLC, the TUC, and all affiliate unions for their maturity and sense of responsibility,” he stated.
He noted that his administration remains committed to continuous engagement with labour leaders and promised that no decision affecting workers would ever be made without broad consultation.
Governor Highlights Achievements in Workers’ Welfare
The governor used the occasion to outline some of the achievements his administration has recorded in improving the welfare of workers. These include the prompt payment of salaries, implementation of the new minimum wage, clearing of outstanding pension arrears, and improvements in working conditions across ministries and parastatals.
He also mentioned the ongoing digital transformation within the state civil service, which has not only improved service delivery but also enhanced efficiency and transparency. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a modern workforce, capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st century.
“We are investing in our people through training, infrastructure, and technology. We believe that an empowered workforce is the foundation for sustainable development. In the coming months, more initiatives aimed at enhancing workers’ productivity and well-being will be rolled out,” the governor announced.
Labour Leaders Respond
In response, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Odion Sule, appreciated the governor’s message and acknowledged some of the positive steps taken by the administration, particularly in addressing workers’ salaries and pensions. However, he also used the occasion to present the union’s demands, which included improved housing for workers, expansion of health insurance coverage, and swift resolution of lingering issues concerning casualization and contract staffing in the public sector.
Comrade Sule stressed the need for continued transparency and sincerity in government dealings, while urging the administration not to rest on its oars.
“We commend Governor Okpebholo for the gains so far, but we also urge him to do more. Workers are the backbone of the state. As we celebrate today, we look forward to deeper reforms that directly impact the quality of our lives,” he said.
A Call for Unity and Progress
Governor Okpebholo concluded his address with a call for unity among all stakeholders, emphasizing that the progress of Edo State is a shared responsibility. He urged workers to continue to uphold the principles of diligence, discipline, and patriotism, while promising that his administration would not waiver in its commitment to their welfare.
“As we mark this Workers’ Day, let us all rededicate ourselves to the ideals of hard work, accountability, and service to humanity. Edo belongs to all of us. Let us work together to build a state that future generations will be proud of,” he concluded.
