Fran Kirby and Chloe Kelly will be absent from England’s Women’s Nations League match against Belgium due to minor injuries.
The two in-form stars are a big loss for Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses, who are already dealing with several key absences as they gear up for UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
England will face Belgium at Ashton Gate, Bristol on Friday (20:00 BST) before heading to Leuven for the return match on Tuesday (19:30 BST).
Kirby & Kelly Injury Update
Kirby, 31, participated in training on Thursday, while Kelly, 27, was absent as both players recover from “little niggles.” There’s hope they’ll be fit for the second fixture.
England manager Sarina Wiegman commented:
“It’s disappointing for them and the team because they’re in a great place. But as always, we prepare for the next steps and consider who is ready to step in.”
Key Absences for England
- Fran Kirby has been in top form for Brighton, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 13 Women’s Super League (WSL) appearances since joining last summer.
- Chloe Kelly, who moved to Arsenal on loan from Manchester City, has played regularly and was instrumental in Arsenal’s Women’s Champions League semi-final qualification with two assists.
In addition to Kirby and Kelly, England is already missing key players like Alex Greenwood, Georgia Stanway, and Lauren Hemp due to injuries.
Alessia Russo in Top Form
Despite the setbacks, Wiegman remains optimistic, highlighting Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, who is currently the WSL’s second-highest goal scorer and leads the Women’s Champions League goal charts with 17 goals.
England captain Leah Williamson, who plays alongside Russo at Arsenal, praised her teammate’s confidence and contributions:
“Alessia is an incredible talent. She’s scoring goals, growing in confidence, and giving back to the team. We all want to see her continue at this level.”
England’s Women’s Nations League Performance
The Lionesses started their Women’s Nations League campaign with a draw against Portugal before securing a 1-0 victory over world champions Spain at Wembley in February.
With the team adapting to injuries and key players stepping up, England will look to continue their strong form against Belgium.
