KOLKATA: The family of a 24-year-old nurse, found dead at a nursing home in West Bengal’s Hooghly district late on Wednesday night, has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing a lack of trust in the state police’s handling of the case. The tragic incident has sparked outrage and calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to officials, the autopsy was conducted on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kalyani. Earlier, the woman’s body had been shifted to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for the post-mortem examination, but her family had expressed concerns over the location. They insisted that the autopsy should be conducted either at AIIMS Kalyani or the Command Hospital in Kolkata, citing fears of potential lapses or bias in the local investigation. Authorities subsequently transferred the body to AIIMS Kalyani on Saturday, where the autopsy was carried out, and later the body was handed over to the grieving family.
The woman’s father has been vocal about his suspicions regarding the nature of his daughter’s death. “We believe that my daughter was murdered and then hanged. We have no faith in the state police. We want a CBI probe into the case,” he told media persons on Saturday, emphasizing the family’s demand for a more impartial investigation. His statements reflect a deep mistrust in the local law enforcement agencies and a plea for a national-level investigation into the incident.
Following a complaint lodged by the father, police registered a murder case and arrested two individuals in connection with the incident. While the arrests indicate some progress in the investigation, the family remains unsatisfied, arguing that a deeper, independent inquiry is necessary to uncover the full truth. Ambika Roy, a BJP legislator from Kalyani, publicly supported the family’s demand, stating, “The family has lost faith in the state police and has demanded a CBI probe. We want a CBI probe.”
The nurse’s death has raised questions about security and oversight in private healthcare facilities. Police officials are investigating all aspects of the case, including the circumstances leading to her death, potential motives, and any lapses in the management or supervision of the nursing home. Authorities are also examining CCTV footage, speaking with staff, and reviewing records to determine whether foul play was involved.
Local residents and healthcare workers have expressed shock over the incident. Many have called for stricter regulations and monitoring of nursing homes and private medical facilities to ensure the safety of employees and patients. The case has also reignited discussions about the treatment of young healthcare professionals, particularly women, in private institutions, highlighting concerns over workplace safety and accountability.
The West Bengal police have assured the public that they are committed to a thorough investigation and that all leads are being pursued. However, the family’s insistence on a CBI probe underscores their lack of confidence in a state-level inquiry and the broader mistrust among citizens regarding certain high-profile criminal investigations.
As the case unfolds, authorities are expected to release more details about the arrested individuals and any potential links to the nursing home’s management or other parties. Meanwhile, the family continues to appeal to both state and central authorities to ensure that justice is served and that the circumstances behind the young nurse’s death are fully clarified.
This tragic case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by healthcare professionals and the importance of stringent safety measures and impartial investigations to maintain public trust in the system. With the CBI potentially being called in, the family hopes for a transparent, credible probe that can provide answers and accountability for this deeply distressing incident.
