The Federal Government has announced the official reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, scheduled for Monday. This comes after months of renovation and upgrade works aimed at improving the airport’s safety, infrastructure, and overall operational standards.
Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who disclosed this during an inspection tour of the facility on Friday, confirmed that the airport was now fully prepared to resume full operations. According to Keyamo, the upgrades carried out at the airport are part of the government’s broader strategy to modernize Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and meet international standards.
“This airport is critical to the economy of the South-East region and indeed the nation at large. We are pleased to announce that after thorough assessments and improvements, Akanu Ibiam International Airport is ready to reopen to commercial activities by Monday,” the Minister stated.
The reopening is expected to boost economic activities in the region, enhance air connectivity, and improve passenger experience. Keyamo explained that the government had invested significant resources to ensure that the airport meets all safety requirements and provides world-class services to travelers.
Major Upgrades Completed
The rehabilitation works at the Enugu airport covered various aspects, including the resurfacing of the runway, installation of new airfield lighting systems, expansion of the terminal building, upgrade of the control tower, and improved safety measures. Other key developments include improved water supply systems, enhanced fire and rescue services, and the provision of modern navigation aids.
According to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the rehabilitation works were carried out with attention to international best practices, ensuring that both domestic and international airlines can operate comfortably from the airport.
The runway, which was previously a source of concern due to wear and tear, has been completely resurfaced to handle larger aircraft and to guarantee safe landings and take-offs. In addition, new Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and lighting have been installed to allow for better visibility, especially during adverse weather conditions.

The news of the reopening has been greeted with excitement by stakeholders across the South-East region. Business leaders, travel agencies, and local residents expressed optimism that the improved airport will help revitalize commerce and tourism in the area.
Chief Emeka Okonkwo, a prominent businessman in Enugu, noted that the airport’s reopening would ease the logistical challenges faced by travelers and businesses alike.
“For months, we had to rely on airports in other states, which added to the cost and stress of doing business. The reopening of the Enugu airport will be a major relief, not just for businesses but also for families and individuals who depend on it for easy movement,” Okonkwo said.
Similarly, the President of the South-East Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Adaobi Nwokedi, praised the Federal Government for completing the rehabilitation works and called for sustained maintenance of the airport facilities.
“We are happy that the government has kept its promise to the South-East. However, it is important that the facilities are properly maintained to avoid another closure in the near future,” Nwokedi urged.
Airlines Ready for Operations
In anticipation of the reopening, several airlines have indicated readiness to resume flight operations at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. Operators such as Air Peace, Dana Air, and Ibom Air have reportedly completed their operational assessments and are preparing to relaunch scheduled flights from the airport.
A spokesperson for Air Peace stated that the airline is committed to resuming flights to and from Enugu immediately after the airport reopens, assuring passengers of seamless service and competitive pricing.
“Our team has already conducted the necessary checks, and we are fully set to resume operations at Enugu airport. We understand the importance of this airport to our customers and the region at large,” the spokesperson said.

The reopening of Enugu airport highlights the Federal Government’s broader commitment to revamping the nation’s aviation sector. Minister Keyamo reiterated that similar rehabilitation efforts are ongoing in several other airports across the country.
