Gavin Newsom Breaks with Democrats on Trans Athletes in Sports

California Governor Criticizes Policy on Transgender Athletes in Female Sports

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a long-time champion of LGBTQ+ rights, has publicly disagreed with his own party over the inclusion of transgender athletes in female sports. Speaking on the debut episode of his podcast, This is Gavin Newsom, the governor called the issue a matter of fairness, aligning with concerns often voiced by conservatives.

Newsom Challenges Democratic Stance on Transgender Athletes

In a candid discussion with Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, Newsom openly acknowledged that allowing trans women to compete in female sports is unfair.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom stated. “It is deeply unfair.”

His remarks signal a rare break from Democratic orthodoxy, as the issue of trans participation in sports has become a hot-button topic across the country.

Newsom on Trump’s Political Attacks and Kamala Harris

During the conversation, Newsom also addressed one of the most controversial attack ads from former President Donald Trump’s campaign. The ad targeted Vice President Kamala Harris for supporting taxpayer-funded gender transition care for detained immigrants and prisoners.

“She didn’t even react to it, which was even more devastating,” Newsom said, suggesting that 90% of Americans disagreed with Harris’ position.

The AB Hernandez Controversy and Newsom’s Personal Connection

Kirk pressed Newsom to take a stance on AB Hernandez, a transgender high school athlete whose triple jump victories in female competitions have sparked national debate. Newsom, a former baseball player, noted that both he and his wife—who played college soccer—value fairness in sports, reinforcing his stance on the issue.

“I revere sports, so the issue of fairness is completely legit,” he said.

Newsom’s Surprising Takes on Hot-Button Issues

The 75-minute interview revealed a softer, more moderate side of Newsom. In contrast to his recent fiery political battles, he:

  • Distanced himself from gender pronouns and the term Latinx
  • Called police defunding “lunacy”
  • Criticized cancel culture
  • Acknowledged leadership issues within Black Lives Matter

His approach mirrored that of HBO’s Bill Maher, who frequently challenges progressive norms.

Newsom on Transgender Rights and Political Backlash

While Newsom acknowledged the mental health struggles faced by transgender individuals, he also admitted that Republicans were winning the debate politically.

“We’re getting crushed on it. Crushed. Crushed,” he said.

His comments highlight a growing rift within the Democratic Party, as the issue of trans inclusion in sports continues to dominate political and cultural debates nationwide.
