Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has officially launched the construction of the state’s first-ever flyover bridge in Benin City. The project, located at Ramat Park, a key area in the heart of the state capital, marks a significant step in the administration’s effort to address the growing issue of traffic congestion in the city.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Tuesday, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the flyover was just the beginning of a broader initiative aimed at improving transportation infrastructure in Edo State. He revealed plans to construct two additional flyover bridges in strategic locations within Benin City, specifically at Dawson Road Junction and the Sapele Road/Adesuwa Road Junction, further enhancing the city’s transportation network.
The governor underscored the importance of the Ramat Park Flyover, describing it as a transformative project that would not only ease traffic for commuters but also boost the economic and social prospects of Benin City and the entire state. He noted that Ramat Park serves as a vital gateway to Benin City, connecting it to other parts of the country, including the Benin-Auchi and Benin-Asaba corridors.
“The completion of the Ramat Park Flyover will provide much-needed relief for motorists in the city and along these key routes,” the governor said. “This project represents a major milestone in our commitment to improving the transportation infrastructure in Edo State. It is a promise made during our campaign, and now, just one week into my administration, we are delivering on it.”
Governor Okpebholo further highlighted the historical significance of Benin City as the first capital of Africa when Europeans first arrived on the continent in the 14th century. He stressed the need for the city to receive a modern facelift to encourage tourism development and showcase its rich heritage to the world.
He also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the Speaker and members of the Edo State House of Assembly for their support and collaboration, as well as to the contractors, CCECC Nigeria Limited, urging them to work diligently and ensure the completion of the project within the 18-month timeline.
The governor reassured the public that all relevant laws and regulations would be strictly adhered to in the execution of the flyover project, as well as future infrastructural developments. He appealed to motorists to remain patient and make temporary sacrifices, as the project is expected to cause some disruptions over the next 18 months, with the ultimate goal of easing the city’s traffic and enhancing the overall urban experience.
