Niger State Governor, Hon. Umar Mohammed Bago, has finally broken his silence over speculations of a political rift between him and his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba. Amid growing rumors of tension within the state’s executive cabinet, the governor has firmly denied any crisis or division, emphasizing that the administration remains united in its commitment to delivering good governance to the people of Niger State.

Speaking during a press briefing held at the Government House in Minna on Tuesday, Governor Bago dismissed the circulating reports as false, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to sow discord within his government. He described his relationship with Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba as “cordial, respectful, and productive,” adding that their shared goals for the state outweigh any differences in opinion or personality.

“There is no quarrel, no rift, and no disloyalty between myself and the Deputy Governor,” Bago said clearly. “We have been working in synergy from the beginning of this administration, and we remain committed to the mandate given to us by the people of Niger State.”

Rumors of a Rift Gain Attention

Speculation about a potential fallout between the governor and his deputy had gained traction in recent weeks, particularly on social media and among political observers. Reports of alleged disagreements over appointments, resource allocation, and internal party dynamics had fueled widespread gossip that all was not well within the state’s leadership.

Some sources had claimed that Deputy Governor Garba was being sidelined in major decisions, especially in matters relating to key policy implementations and political consultations. Others suggested that internal party conflicts, particularly within the All Progressives Congress (APC), were gradually seeping into the administration, creating cracks in the previously strong working relationship between the two men.

However, Governor Bago used the media interaction as an opportunity to address these speculations head-on, expressing disappointment at how misinformation can easily spiral out of control in the absence of facts.

“These rumors are being peddled by those who are uncomfortable with the progress we are making. They want to destabilize this government by creating imaginary conflicts. But let me assure you, we are more united now than ever before,” Bago stated firmly.

A United Front in Governance

Governor Bago went on to highlight several joint projects and initiatives that he and Deputy Governor Garba have launched together since assuming office in May 2023. He pointed to the successful implementation of agricultural reforms, educational infrastructure development, and youth empowerment schemes as evidence of their teamwork and unity.

“One person cannot govern alone. My deputy has been a critical part of the progress we have recorded so far. He brings a lot of value, experience, and grassroots connection to the table, and I appreciate that,” Bago noted.

He further stressed that governance requires collaboration, understanding, and tolerance, and that he and his deputy have cultivated a professional relationship rooted in mutual respect and responsibility.

In the same vein, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who was also present at the briefing, confirmed that there was no fallout between him and the governor. He praised Bago’s leadership style and affirmed his total loyalty to the administration.

“Let me put it clearly: I have no issues with His Excellency. He has shown me nothing but respect and trust. As his deputy, I am fully aligned with his vision for Niger State. We are partners in this project, and together we will deliver on our promises,” Garba stated.

Political Intrigues and Opposition Tactics

Political analysts believe that the rumors of a rift may be a calculated attempt by opposition forces or disgruntled elements within the ruling party to exploit perceived vulnerabilities in the Bago-led government. With local government elections around the corner and preparations for 2027 already quietly underway, the stakes are high in Niger politics.

Governor Bago acknowledged that the political terrain is often filled with distractions and sabotage but maintained that his focus remains on delivering results to the people of the state.

“I understand the nature of politics. People will try to distract you with lies and propaganda. But we are not bothered. Our priority is to develop Niger State and improve the lives of our citizens,” he said.

He called on members of the public, party faithful, and the media to verify information before spreading it, urging everyone to reject divisive narratives that threaten the unity of the state’s leadership.

Commitment to Development Agenda

Governor Bago concluded the briefing by reiterating his administration’s key priorities, which include agriculture, infrastructure, security, and education. He promised that both himself and Deputy Governor Garba will continue to work harmoniously to ensure that Niger State becomes a model of progressive governance in Nigeria.

“We came here with a mission, and that mission is to transform Niger State. I am happy to say that with the support of my deputy, cabinet members, civil servants, and the good people of this state, we are on the right track,” he stated.

In a political environment often rife with drama and internal strife, the governor’s open and direct response has been praised by political watchers and citizens alike as a demonstration of transparency and leadership maturity.

Public Reactions and Outlook

Following the press conference, reactions on social media and within the political space have been mixed. While many supporters expressed relief and appreciation for the governor’s openness, others remained skeptical, suggesting that all may not be as smooth as portrayed.

Nonetheless, for now, the leadership of Niger State has presented a united front, dismissing speculations and reaffirming their shared vision. As the administration continues its efforts in development and service delivery, time will ultimately reveal the true strength of the relationship between Governor Umar Bago and Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba.

For the people of Niger State, however, the hope remains that political harmony will translate into meaningful progress across all sectors of governance.
