Greenland’s Prime Minister Rejects U.S. Interest in Buying Island, Citing Disrespectful Remarks

Greenland’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, strongly condemned recent U.S. comments about acquiring the Arctic territory, declaring that “Greenland is not for sale” and denouncing the rhetoric as disrespectful.

Standing alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during a press conference at Marienborg, the official residence near Copenhagen, Nielsen emphasized Greenland’s sovereignty and its growing desire for independence.

“Greenland will never, ever be a piece of property that can be bought by just anyone,” Nielsen said. “The remarks from the United States have lacked respect, and in such times, unity within the Kingdom of Denmark is essential.”

The comments come in response to revived interest from U.S. President Donald Trump in acquiring Greenland — a strategically located, mineral-rich island that is part of the Danish Realm but has broad self-rule.

Greenlandic political leaders recently formed a new coalition government to strengthen the territory’s stance on autonomy and to assert its political independence in light of external interest, particularly from the United States.

Nielsen’s visit to Denmark, which began on Saturday, is focused on reinforcing ties and enhancing cooperation between Greenland and Denmark. Prime Minister Frederiksen affirmed Denmark’s commitment to supporting Greenland’s development.

“Denmark has the will to invest in Greenland’s society — not only because of our shared history, but because we are part of a united commonwealth,” Frederiksen said. “We will continue to invest in Greenland’s future.”

The visit will conclude with a royal meeting between Nielsen and King Frederik X on Monday, followed by a joint trip to Greenland.

When asked about a potential meeting with President Trump, Frederiksen responded diplomatically:

“We always welcome dialogue with the American president. However, our position as the Danish Realm has been made very clear.”
