Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped Samuel Ekerenam, a prominent businessman and owner of Hephzibah Mall in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to reports, the assailants stormed the victim’s shopping complex and began firing shots indiscriminately to drive people away.
A witness, Udobong Asuquo, revealed that during the attack, Ekerenam’s driver was shot dead, and the police officer assigned to him was seriously injured.
The incident took place around 10:00 pm on Saturday, leading to the driver’s death and the police officer’s injuries.
A family member, speaking anonymously, stated that the kidnappers have yet to make contact, leaving the motive unclear. “We are still unsure whether the abduction is for ransom or another reason, as they have not reached out to the family,” the source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Timfon John, confirmed the incident and assured that the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, has ordered a full search operation for the businessman.
The spokesperson emphasized that authorities are committed to ensuring the safe return of the victim and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
