Henry Golding is reuniting with his Crazy Rich Asians co-stars as the beloved film makes its way to the small screen. The actor, who starred as Nick Young in the 2018 box office hit, shared his excitement about the upcoming TV adaptation during a recent interview on the “Today” show.
Reuniting with Co-Stars for TV Series
Golding revealed that he’s recently caught up with his Crazy Rich Asians collaborators, including Awkwafina and Gemma Chan, on separate occasions.
“I met up with Awkwafina the other night, and not too long ago, I reconnected with Gemma Chan and Crazy Rich Asians co-writer Adele Lim in London to discuss where we’re heading,” Golding said. “Everyone is excited.”
The Crazy Rich Asians movie, based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling book trilogy, was a historic success. It featured an all-Asian cast and became a cultural milestone for the Asian community in Hollywood. The film grossed nearly $240 million worldwide on a budget of just $30 million.
The Future of the ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Franchise
The Crazy Rich Asians franchise made waves not just for its storytelling, but also for its representation. While fans were hoping for a sequel based on Kwan’s second book, China Rich Girlfriend, the project hit a snag in 2019 when Lim left the film due to pay disparity issues.
However, the franchise is getting a fresh start on the small screen with a TV series adaptation in development at Max (Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service). Lim is returning as the series’ showrunner and executive producer, while Jon M. Chu, the director of the original film, will serve as an executive producer through his Electric Somewhere production banner.
The series is set to be based on Kwan’s books, though specific plot details have yet to be confirmed. Golding hinted that the show could expand the world of Crazy Rich Asians in new ways, saying, “We have so much runway to really share the world.”
Golding and the Cast’s Role in the TV Series
While the show is still in the early stages of development and no official casting decisions have been made, Lim is reportedly eager to bring back original cast members. Although Golding didn’t confirm his official involvement, he expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity.
“I think we’re really excited to show more,” Golding said, reflecting on the potential of the series to expand upon the world of Crazy Rich Asians and further explore the characters and dynamics that captivated audiences in the original film.
The Impact of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’
The success of Crazy Rich Asians not only shattered box office records but also paved the way for more diverse representation in Hollywood, specifically for Asian actors and creatives. The TV series promises to continue that legacy, offering fans a deeper dive into the opulent world Kwan created.
With Adele Lim at the helm, Henry Golding, and the rest of the original cast potentially returning, the future of Crazy Rich Asians looks promising, and fans are eagerly anticipating what’s next for the iconic franchise.
