House GOP’s Spanish Tweet Sparks MAGA Backlash

A modest tweet containing some Spanish-language text posted by the House GOP’s official X (formerly Twitter) account ignited outrage among conservative hardliners on Tuesday.

Reactions ranged from xenophobic slogans like “We speak English here” to calls for firings and accusations of pandering. Some even speculated the account had been hacked.

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas), a vocal MAGA supporter, led the charge, declaring:

“We’re in America. We represent Americans. We don’t pander in foreign languages. Speak English.”

Others cited former President Trump’s previous executive order to designate English as the official language and his administration’s removal of the Spanish-language White House website, reinstated briefly before being shut down again.

This isn’t the first time the House GOP has posted in Spanish. A congratulatory message earlier this year — “presidente Donald Trump y vicepresidente JD Vance” — also triggered conservative backlash.

Context: GOP’s Latino Outreach Undermined

The controversy underscores the Republican Party’s ongoing struggle to balance Latino outreach efforts with the anti-immigration and nationalist sentiment of the MAGA base. While Spanish-speaking voters remain a key demographic, messaging in Spanish has become a lightning rod within the party.
