Katy Perry Claps Back at Blue Origin Backlash During Opening Night of ‘Lifetimes’ Tour

Katy Perry isn’t letting the haters bring her down.

During the opening night of her highly anticipated “Lifetimes” tour in Mexico City, the pop star addressed the controversy surrounding her recent Blue Origin space flight head-on — and she did it in classic Katy style: with choreography, spectacle, and a pointed message to the crowd.

Sporting a shimmering silver bodysuit, Perry soared through the arena in a rigged harness, recreating her brief but much-talked-about voyage aboard Jeff Bezos’ New Shepard 31 spacecraft. At one point, she floated around taking selfies with backup dancers dressed in blue NASA space suits.

Then, turning to the audience, Perry posed a simple but powerful question:
“Has anyone ever called your dreams crazy?”

A clear nod to the widespread criticism she — and her fellow passengers Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, and others — faced after their 10-minute journey to space earlier this month.

The Space Flight Backlash

Following the April 14 launch, celebrities and fans alike blasted the mission as tone-deaf and wasteful.

Model Emily Ratajkowski called the flight “end time s–t” on TikTok, criticizing the participants for championing environmental causes while boarding a spacecraft funded by a company often accused of harming the planet.

Actress Jessica Chastain added to the uproar, sharing a Guardian op-ed that labeled the Blue Origin trip as showcasing “the utter defeat of American feminism.” Meanwhile, Olivia Munn and Olivia Wilde questioned the decision to spend millions on space tourism when so many Americans are struggling with basic needs.

“What are you guys gonna do up in space? What are you doing up there?” Munn asked during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends.

Perry’s Response on Tour

Instead of offering a formal statement, Perry wove her response into the show’s narrative — blending visuals of her Blue Origin experience into the choreography and addressing her critics without naming names.

The performance wasn’t just about celebrating dreams; it was a subtle reminder that Perry sees her space flight not as vanity, but as a symbol of ambition and possibility.

Meanwhile, Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez also defended the mission, saying critics failed to recognize the inspiration their flight brought to young women and girls. Sánchez, now engaged to Bezos, encouraged detractors to visit Blue Origin themselves to understand the passion of its workforce.

“It’s a big deal for them,” Sánchez said.
