Former member of the House of Representatives and prominent Kano politician, Hon. Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, has declared that he has no regrets about leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), insisting that his decision was informed by a sincere desire to find the best solution for the people he represents.
Speaking during a press briefing in Kano over the weekend, Kawu Sumaila revealed that his political movement is guided by the principle of service and the pursuit of better governance, not personal ambition or party loyalty. He noted that his departure from the NNPP was the result of thoughtful consideration and engagement with his supporters, who he said have always remained his top priority.
“I Will Always Choose My People Over Party Lines”
Kawu Sumaila emphasized that his focus has always been on advancing the interests of his constituents and that any political platform that hinders that objective cannot be considered sustainable in the long run.
“I want to make it very clear – I don’t have any regrets leaving the NNPP. My decision was not borne out of bitterness or conflict. It was a deliberate, calculated move to ensure that I remain in a position to fight for what is right for my people,” he said.
He continued: “Politics is not about personal interest. It’s about providing leadership, solving problems, and creating opportunities for the people who elected you. Once a party stops aligning with those goals, it becomes necessary to seek another path.”
A History of Political Engagement and Service
Kawu Sumaila, a seasoned politician and former Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters to President Muhammadu Buhari, has long been a prominent figure in Kano politics. Known for his grassroots appeal and strong network among the youth and community leaders, Sumaila has built a reputation as a pragmatic politician who consistently puts public service above partisan loyalty.
Having previously served in the House of Representatives, representing Sumaila/Takai Federal Constituency, he has been involved in multiple legislative and community-based initiatives, particularly in education, youth empowerment, and healthcare.
His decision to join the NNPP in the buildup to the 2023 general elections was seen as a strategic move to align with the growing political momentum of the party under the leadership of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. However, his recent exit suggests a shift in direction and a return to a more people-centered approach.
Why He Left the NNPP
Explaining the reason for his departure, Sumaila cited internal issues within the NNPP that made it difficult for him to continue promoting the interests of his constituents. While he refrained from directly attacking any individual, he made it clear that there were irreconcilable differences in vision and strategy between him and the party leadership.
“There were decisions being taken that did not reflect the will of the people. There was a growing disconnect between the leadership and the grassroots. I could not, in good conscience, continue on that path. I owe it to my people to remain honest and committed to their welfare,” he said.
Sumaila stressed that leadership should never be about personal ego or political calculation but rather about consistent and honest service. “If you’re not ready to serve, then you have no business being in politics,” he added.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for Kawu Sumaila?
While he did not confirm his next political destination, there is growing speculation that Kawu Sumaila may be returning to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party under which he once served in a federal capacity. However, he remained noncommittal, stating that his primary concern for now is consulting with his supporters and community stakeholders.
“I’m still in active consultations. Whatever decision I make next will be based on the collective interest of my people. I don’t jump from party to party without purpose. I move when the need arises and when the people I serve demand a better alternative,” he stated.
He also noted that Nigeria’s democracy is still evolving and that politicians must learn to be flexible and responsive to the ever-changing dynamics on the ground.
Supporters Back Sumaila’s Decision
Kawu Sumaila’s exit from the NNPP has been met with mixed reactions in political circles, but among his supporters in Kano South, the move has received wide acceptance. Many of them see his departure as a bold and necessary step to realign with a political structure that prioritizes development and fairness.
A local youth leader in Takai, Ibrahim Bala, praised Sumaila for his transparency and commitment. “He always carries us along. He listens, he consults, and he respects the people. We believe in his leadership, and wherever he goes, we will follow,” he said.
Similarly, Hajiya Maryam Danladi, a women’s leader in Sumaila Local Government, described the move as “long overdue,” adding that the NNPP had failed to fulfill its early promises.
A Broader Message About Political Accountability
Sumaila’s departure from the NNPP has brought into focus the broader theme of political accountability and the importance of prioritizing the electorate over political ambition. His stance, particularly in the highly competitive political landscape of Kano State, serves as a reminder that loyalty to the people must come before loyalty to party structures.
As political realignments continue ahead of future elections, observers say Sumaila’s next move will be critical in shaping the future of Kano South politics and possibly influencing state-wide dynamics.
For now, Kawu Sumaila remains a political figure whose influence extends beyond party lines, rooted deeply in the communities he has served for decades.
