Naomi Judd and Larry Strickland’s 33-year marriage was filled with highs and lows, as revealed in The Judd Family: Truth Be Told docuseries airing May 10-11. Strickland, the widower of the country music legend, made a startling revelation about a violent incident in their relationship. He confirmed that Naomi once shot a gun at him after discovering his infidelity.
In a voiceover from Naomi’s 1993 memoir, Love Can Build a Bridge, Judd shared the story of their intense and passionate love, despite Strickland’s frequent absences. She recalled how a woman from the Northeast called their Nashville home, confessing her love for Strickland. When he returned, Naomi was furious. In a fit of rage, she tore up photographs of them together and threw his belongings out into the yard.
During a pivotal moment in the docuseries, Strickland watched a scene from the TV movie Love Can Build a Bridge, where Naomi, portrayed by Kathleen York, shoots her husband (played by Bruce Greenwood) after discovering his cheating. Strickland, visibly affected by the scene, confirmed the event’s authenticity, saying, “Well, it really happened. That’s all I can say. It happened.”
Naomi and Larry’s turbulent relationship began in 1979 when they met, and they married a decade later in May 1989. They stayed together for 33 years before Naomi’s death in April 2022 at the age of 76.
In a December 2022 interview with People, Strickland reflected on the years he spent caring for Naomi, who struggled with mental health issues. “For the past 13 years or more, I was with her 24/7. I never left the house without Naomi knowing where I was going and when I would be back,” he shared, emphasizing the devotion he felt in looking after her during difficult times.
