Lisa Vanderpump is embarking on a new chapter with Vanderpump Rules, and in the season finale of Bravo’s Hot Mic Podcast, she opened up about why a cast shakeup was necessary for the upcoming season. The change, which was announced in November 2024, has left fans eagerly anticipating the fresh direction of the show. Despite its long-running success with 11 seasons and multiple Emmy nominations, Lisa admitted that it was time for a change.
In a conversation with Vanderpump Rules producer Alex Baskin, Lisa explained that the show’s dynamic had evolved over time. Alex noted that the show had strayed from its original foundation, which focused on the lives of the cast members working at SUR, Lisa’s popular West Hollywood restaurant. Over the years, the focus shifted more toward their personal relationships, and the series lost some of its initial charm.
A Look Back at the Original Cast of ‘Vanderpump Rules’
When Vanderpump Rules first debuted in 2013, it showcased a group of servers and bartenders—also known as SUR-vers—working at SUR. The original cast included Tom Sandoval, Katie Maloney, Tom Schwartz, and Scheana Shay, all of whom played pivotal roles in the show’s success. Lisa fondly recalled the early days of the series, saying, “It was incredible when we first talked about creating that show… They were extraordinary then, and they continued to be.” She emphasized how the cast was open and authentic, key qualities they sought in creating a reality show.
A Changing Landscape
However, after over a decade of Vanderpump Rules, with many cast members moving on to other opportunities, the dynamic at SUR had shifted. “Lives took a different direction,” Lisa explained, highlighting that it was no longer the same show. “I felt that we told the story,” she continued, adding that she and Alex had agreed that they didn’t want the show to go down “on a sinking ship.” The decision to refresh the cast was made with the understanding that the show had become increasingly difficult to produce.
Why the Change Was Necessary
Despite the incredible success of the show, including the massive ratings boost following the infamous Scandoval, Lisa was ready for change. She revealed that Vanderpump Rules had lost some of its authenticity, which had been a core part of the show’s charm. “Even though Vanderpump Rules was a wonderful show… it changed. I think it was time to move on,” Lisa shared. She also hinted at the excitement that comes with new faces and fresh drama, adding, “I think we lost that, and it was time to make a change.”
While Lisa continues to have a strong relationship with some former cast members, she acknowledged that others’ attitudes had shifted, and the show no longer felt like what it once was. “I think it changed, and their attitude changed,” Lisa said.
