The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed reports alleging that it has struck a deal with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election.
The claim, made by human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju in a viral social media video, was refuted by the LP in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh. The party labeled the allegation as false and baseless.
The LP reaffirmed its status as the leading opposition party, with its chairman, Julius Abure, being described as a key figure in the opposition.
The party challenged Adeyanju and others to provide any evidence that the LP leadership, or Abure, has collaborated, is collaborating, or plans to collaborate with President Bola Tinubu or the APC for the 2027 elections.
The statement read in part: “The Labour Party has come across a video circulating on social media in which lawyer Deji Adeyanju made defamatory remarks about our party, particularly targeting our National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure. Let us be clear—these statements are lies, unfounded, and utterly false.
“After the 2023 general election, the Labour Party worked tirelessly to challenge the status quo. We’ve consistently critiqued government policies, offered solutions, and played our role as a visible opposition force.
“It is deeply troubling that someone would attempt to discredit such an active and dedicated party in such a reckless and callous manner.
“We are therefore challenging Adeyanju and others to provide proof that the leadership of the Labour Party or Mr. Abure has worked, is working, or intends to work with President Bola Tinubu or the APC for the 2027 elections.
“As a political organization, we regard Adeyanju’s comments as criminal defamation, an attempt to tarnish our hard-earned reputation.
“We call on Mr. Adeyanju, who should be aware of the serious consequences of defamation, to immediately provide evidence to support his claims that the Labour Party has been ‘bought’ by President Tinubu. Alternatively, he should withdraw his damaging statements and apologize to the leadership and millions of Labour Party members for the harm caused.”
