U.S. Representative Don Bacon (R-Neb.) is contemplating retirement at the end of his current term, which expires in 2026. Known for his independence within the Republican Party, Bacon’s potential departure could significantly impact the GOP’s slim House majority.
At 61, Bacon has represented Nebraska’s swing district for five terms. This district, which Kamala Harris carried by 4 percentage points in the 2024 U.S. election, is increasingly competitive. The Republican Party has hoped to maintain control of this district in the 2026 election, but Bacon’s retirement could diminish their chances.
In a statement issued by his campaign, Bacon explained that his decision would ultimately be a family matter, but emphasized that he will remain committed to public service, regardless of whether he runs for a sixth term. “I’ll never really retire until God takes me home,” he said. “I want to always be productive and making a difference. But regarding running for a sixth term, that is a family decision. I’ve served four decades in public life when including the military.”
Bacon added that the decision would be made in the summer of 2025, leaving his constituents and party leaders awaiting his next move.
Bacon’s Independence and Criticism of Trump
Bacon, a retired U.S. Air Force general and current member of the House Armed Services Committee, has been known for his independent stance on key issues. His willingness to criticize former President Donald Trump has made him a notable figure in a Republican Party often characterized by strong loyalty to Trump.
Earlier this year, Bacon called for the dismissal of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth amid reports that Hegseth had sent sensitive military plans via text message to his family and others. Bacon has also publicly opposed Trump’s policies regarding the war in Ukraine, accusing the president of attempting to appease Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In addition, Bacon introduced legislation that would require Congressional approval before Trump could impose tariffs, and he has been a vocal critic of the White House’s handling of federal funds.
Backlash and Personal Cost
Bacon’s independent stance has not been without consequences. Trump supporters have targeted him on social media, and in 2023, Bacon’s wife received a threat after the congressman did not back Jim Jordan for House speaker. The incident was investigated by U.S. Capitol Police, but no charges were filed. Bacon revealed that his wife had become so fearful for her safety that she began sleeping with a gun.
Despite these challenges, Bacon has maintained his position, stating his commitment to serving his constituents and country.
