Mariel Molino Reflects on Lala’s Heartbreaking Fate

In an exclusive interview with TVLine, Mariel Molino opens up about the emotional toll of filming Lala’s final scenes, the deep connection between Lala and Gibbs, and her pride in the series’ finale.

TVLINE: Mariel, I just rewatched the last moments of the NCIS: Origins finale… they’re so emotional!

Mariel Molino: It’s insane, right? I’m still processing it myself!

TVLINE: Did you get to see the rough cut with all the music and Mark Harmon’s narration?

Mariel Molino: I haven’t seen it yet, but just hearing about it makes me excited. Mark’s narration is so powerful!

TVLINE: What was the most heartbreaking part of filming the finale for you?

Mariel Molino: The hardest part for me was that Lala never got the chance to say “I love you” to Gibbs. I think she was about to, and that’s what makes it so heartbreaking—her regret of never expressing how she truly felt. Losing someone without being able to say those words is something I think many people can relate to, and that was a huge emotional moment for Lala.

TVLINE: Lala and Gibbs’ relationship seems so complex. How do you think Lala views Gibbs by the end of the series?

Mariel Molino: Lala deeply cares for him, more than we’ve seen. Even though she never says it, her actions speak volumes. In the end, Lala is willing to sacrifice everything for him, which shows the depth of her loyalty and love.

TVLINE: What was the most challenging scene for you to film?

Mariel Molino: The pool scene with Gibbs, where Lala is trying to get him to understand how she feels, was nerve-wracking. But the most intense was definitely the Jeep scene. Filming the moment where Lala is upside down in the vehicle was incredibly challenging, both physically and emotionally. The team did an amazing job creating the atmosphere—it’s something I’ll always be proud of.

TVLINE: Why does Lala lie to Lara about being involved in Gibbs’ actions?

Mariel Molino: Lala’s loyalty is everything to her. Even though she wasn’t physically with Gibbs when the shooting happened, she stands by him because she feels responsible for protecting him and the team. Her military training and sense of duty to those she loves drive her to make this ultimate sacrifice.

TVLINE: What was the hardest part about filming Lala’s death scene?

Mariel Molino: The Jeep stunt was both exciting and nerve-wracking. Being upside down in a harness with blood capsules in my mouth was physically demanding, but the most challenging part was maintaining calm and focus to make the scene as real as possible.

TVLINE: What will you miss the most about NCIS: Origins?

Mariel Molino: I’ll miss the cast and crew the most. We all got along so well, and the bond we formed is something special. I’m definitely going to miss seeing everyone every day, but I’m also excited to take on new projects.
