The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has revealed that the Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded significant victories in the nation’s fight against terrorism, insurgency, and other security threats over the past three years, neutralizing 1,770 terrorists and arresting 3,070 suspects across various theatres of operation.
General Musa made this known during a press briefing in Abuja while presenting a comprehensive report on the achievements of the military under the current administration. The event was part of a broader initiative to provide updates on the government’s security performance and reassure Nigerians of the armed forces’ commitment to restoring peace and stability across the country.
According to the CDS, the figures represent operations conducted between 2021 and 2024 and reflect the concerted efforts of military personnel operating in the North East, North West, North Central, and other troubled regions.
“In the last three years, our troops, through various coordinated operations, have neutralized no fewer than 1,770 terrorists,” General Musa stated. “Additionally, 3,070 criminal elements, including insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, and their collaborators, have been apprehended and are being prosecuted according to the law.”
The CDS attributed these successes to improved synergy among the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other security agencies, enhanced intelligence gathering, and the acquisition of sophisticated equipment which has significantly boosted operational capabilities.
He also emphasized the critical role of local communities, traditional rulers, and vigilante groups who have cooperated with the military by providing timely information leading to the disruption of several terrorist networks.
General Musa highlighted that the military’s success is not only measured by the number of terrorists neutralized but also by the substantial number of hostages rescued and communities liberated from the grip of insurgents.
“Over 2,000 hostages, including women and children, have been rescued from captivity, and numerous communities previously under terrorist control have been reclaimed and are now gradually returning to normalcy,” he noted.
The CDS acknowledged that the security challenges facing Nigeria are complex and evolving but maintained that the Armed Forces have adapted their strategies to meet the threats head-on.
“Our approach has moved beyond traditional combat operations. We are adopting a multidimensional strategy that combines kinetic and non-kinetic measures, including dialogue, deradicalization programs, and community engagement,” he explained.
Speaking further, General Musa assured Nigerians that the military remains fully committed to ensuring that terrorist activities are brought to an end and that peace is restored nationwide. However, he called for greater support from citizens, particularly in providing intelligence and resisting the lure of collaborating with criminal elements.
“We need every Nigerian to be a stakeholder in national security,” the CDS urged. “The success of military operations is greatly enhanced when the people actively support our efforts. Together, we can defeat the enemies of our nation.”
On the challenges faced by the Armed Forces, General Musa mentioned issues such as inadequate funding, logistical difficulties in remote areas, and the complex nature of asymmetric warfare, where insurgents blend into civilian populations. Nevertheless, he praised the resilience, patriotism, and professionalism displayed by Nigerian troops, often operating under harsh conditions.
He also reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ apolitical stance and their loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, reiterating that they would continue to discharge their duties professionally without interference in the democratic process.
General Musa extended condolences to the families of fallen heroes and assured that their sacrifices would not be in vain. “We honor the bravery of our fallen comrades. Their sacrifices inspire us to continue fighting until every inch of Nigeria is safe,” he said solemnly.
Meanwhile, security analysts have welcomed the report, describing it as a positive development that underscores the military’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism. They, however, cautioned that sustained success would require a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of insecurity, such as poverty, unemployment, and weak governance structures in affected regions.
As the nation looks forward to a more secure future, the Nigerian Armed Forces remain at the forefront of the battle, determined to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country against all internal and external threats.
The Defence Headquarters has promised to keep the public informed of ongoing developments, urging citizens to remain vigilant and continue supporting the military through credible information and cooperation.
With the current momentum, many Nigerians hope that a lasting peace is within reach — a peace built on the sacrifice, courage, and unwavering dedication of the country’s armed forces.
