The Rivers State government has confirmed five cholera cases and at least nine related deaths in an outbreak affecting two Local Government Areas: Akuku-Toru and Andoni.
State Commissioner for Health, Adaeze Oreh, revealed that confirmed cases were reported in Akuku-Toru, while the nine deaths occurred across both Akuku-Toru and Andoni LGAs.
Oreh stated that emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread. She also mentioned that heightened sensitization efforts are underway to educate residents on preventive measures.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene and promptly reporting suspected cases to health authorities. She urged parents to cooperate with health teams in mitigating the outbreak’s impact.
Residents in the affected communities are advised to practice proper sanitation, drink only safe water, and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration.
Oreh reassured the public that the government is committed to safeguarding public health and will provide updates as the situation develops.
