NEW DELHI: Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma on Wednesday announced that two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other slow-moving vehicles will not be permitted on the newly inaugurated Urban Extension Road-2 (UER-II), citing safety concerns and the high-speed nature of the corridor. The minister stressed that allowing such vehicles on the expressway could lead to serious accidents, urging authorities to enforce restrictions strictly to ensure commuter safety.
Speaking during a Union Territory-level coordination committee meeting, Verma highlighted the need for immediate construction of service roads alongside UER-II. He instructed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to begin work on these roads without delay, emphasizing that they would provide residents of nearby areas with safe and seamless access to the expressway. “Service roads should be constructed immediately by NHAI so that people living in nearby areas can have smooth and safe access towards UER-II. This will not only improve local connectivity but also ensure better traffic management on the corridor,” Verma stated in an official release.
UER-II, designed as a high-speed urban expressway, aims to decongest Delhi’s arterial roads and improve overall traffic movement across the city. However, its high-speed design has raised safety concerns, particularly for vulnerable road users such as cyclists, motorcyclists, and slower vehicles. To address these concerns, the Delhi Traffic Police will enforce the ban on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and other slow-moving vehicles, with a combination of awareness campaigns, signages, and public announcements to educate commuters about the new regulations.
“UER-II is not just another road; it is a high-speed lifeline for Delhi. We are committed to ensuring that commuters get world-class infrastructure without compromising safety. Restrictions on unsafe vehicle movements will be strictly enforced,” Verma added, emphasizing that safety remains a top priority.
In addition to traffic management, the minister also directed concerned authorities to implement a permanent and robust drainage system along vulnerable stretches of the corridor. Areas such as Karala-Kanjhawala Road, Mundka-Karala Road, and regions near Barwala Village in North West Delhi have historically faced waterlogging issues during monsoon periods. Verma instructed officials to ensure that the drainage plan is designed for long-term efficiency, preventing recurring flooding and disruptions to traffic flow.
The minister underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination to deliver all components of the expressway project efficiently. This includes timely completion of service roads, proper signage, pedestrian pathways where required, and maintenance of drainage infrastructure. “Only through coordinated efforts between the PWD, NHAI, Traffic Police, and other departments can we ensure that UER-II functions safely and efficiently as intended,” he said.
Verma also highlighted the broader objectives of UER-II, stating that the expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between northern and western parts of Delhi, while providing an alternative route to ease congestion on existing arterial roads. By restricting vulnerable vehicles and ensuring dedicated service roads, authorities aim to strike a balance between high-speed connectivity and commuter safety.
To complement enforcement measures, awareness campaigns will be rolled out across multiple platforms to inform residents and commuters about vehicle restrictions, safe usage of service roads, and precautions during travel on UER-II. Public cooperation is expected to be crucial for the successful implementation of these rules, which are designed to prevent accidents and ensure smoother traffic flow.
With these measures, the Delhi government aims to establish UER-II not only as a modern infrastructure milestone but also as a model for safe and efficient urban expressway management. Minister Verma concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to providing world-class road infrastructure while prioritizing the safety and convenience of all commuters in the city.
