P-Square’s Ex-Manager, Jude Okoye Arraigned For Alleged ₦1.3 Billion Fraud

JUDE OKOYE

Lagos, Nigeria – The former manager of the popular Nigerian music duo P-Square, Jude Okoye, has been arraigned in court over allegations of financial fraud amounting to ₦1.3 billion. The case, which has drawn significant attention from the entertainment industry and the public, involves claims of misappropriation of funds, breach of trust, and financial misconduct.

According to court documents, Jude Okoye, who is also the elder brother of the defunct music duo Peter and Paul Okoye, allegedly diverted funds intended for business investments and artist management. The prosecution alleges that Okoye used his position as a music executive to engage in fraudulent financial activities, including the mismanagement of funds belonging to business associates, partners, and artists.

The Allegations

Prosecutors claim that Jude Okoye engaged in financial mismanagement over several years, allegedly siphoning large sums of money from contracts, endorsements, and music deals associated with P-Square and other affiliated businesses. Sources close to the case suggest that funds intended for talent development, business investments, and corporate partnerships were instead funneled into personal accounts and unauthorized projects.

Investigators further allege that Okoye manipulated accounting records and financial reports to obscure transactions and conceal the true state of the finances. His legal team has, however, denied these allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.

Court Proceedings Begin

At the Federal High Court in Lagos, where Okoye was arraigned, the prosecution presented evidence, including financial records, bank statements, and witness testimonies. The court heard claims that Okoye had promised investors substantial returns but failed to deliver on these agreements.

During the hearing, the presiding judge read out the charges, including fraud, breach of trust, and money laundering. Okoye pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted bail on stringent conditions, including the surrender of his international passport and a requirement to provide two sureties with significant financial standing.

Industry Reactions

The allegations have sent shockwaves through the Nigerian music industry, with various stakeholders expressing mixed reactions. Some industry insiders believe that the charges could be part of a broader campaign against entertainment executives, while others argue that financial mismanagement in the industry needs to be scrutinized more closely.

Several artists and music producers who have worked with Jude Okoye have expressed surprise at the allegations, describing him as a reputable figure in the industry. Others, however, claim that financial disputes have long surrounded his dealings, particularly following the publicized split of P-Square in 2017.

Peter and Paul Okoye, who have had a complicated relationship with their elder brother over the years, have yet to publicly comment on the matter. However, sources close to the duo suggest that they are monitoring developments closely.

Legal Defense

Jude Okoye’s legal representatives have dismissed the charges as a calculated attempt to tarnish his reputation. In a press statement, his lead counsel, Barrister Chike Onyeka, described the case as “a witch hunt designed to damage the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most respected entertainment executives.”

Onyeka further stated that his client was confident of proving his innocence and reclaiming his good name. He added that they would challenge the prosecution’s evidence and expose inconsistencies in the allegations.

What’s Next?

The court has scheduled the next hearing for early next month, with both sides expected to present further evidence and witnesses. If found guilty, Okoye could face severe penalties, including imprisonment, asset forfeiture, and fines.

As the case unfolds, it will continue to attract public and media attention, with many eager to see whether this will mark another high-profile financial scandal in Nigeria’s entertainment industry or a case of wrongful prosecution.

For now, Jude Okoye remains free on bail, but the legal battle ahead could have lasting implications for his career and legacy in the music business.
