Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale Developing Strong Backcourt Chemistry in Dallas Wings Training Camp

The Dallas Wings are in the early stages of building their identity under first-year head coach Chris Koclanes, and one key aspect that is already taking shape is the blossoming backcourt duo of Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale.

As reported by DallasHoopsJournal.com, Paige Bueckers has frequently been entrusted with running the offense during her first WNBA training camp, allowing Arike Ogunbowale to shift to a more natural off-ball role.

“I’ve always been more of an off-ball type of player, so she’s a great on-ball presence,” Ogunbowale explained. “When I bring the ball up, Paige moves off the ball. It’s definitely working well for us so far, and I think it’s going to be really beneficial this season.”

Bueckers, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, has embraced the challenge of learning the Dallas Wings’ offense, along with understanding the strengths, weaknesses, and playing styles of her teammates.

The former UConn star led the Huskies to an undefeated Big East season, a conference tournament title, and the program’s 12th NCAA national championship. During her final college season, she averaged 19.9 points, 4.6 assists, 4.4 rebounds, 2.1 steals, and 0.8 blocks in 38 games.

“It’s getting better every day,” Bueckers shared. “I’m just trying to build off each practice. It’s an adjustment—learning a new offense, getting to know new teammates, and understanding the system—but I’m focused on growing and improving daily.”

The chemistry between Bueckers and Ogunbowale has extended beyond the court, as both players have developed a strong connection during the early days of training camp. Their complementary styles have translated into smooth, effective offensive sequences during scrimmages.

Coach Koclanes has been impressed with their approach to playing together.

“I’ve been really impressed with the mutual respect they have for each other and how intentional they’ve been about getting each other involved,” Koclanes said. “I’m confident in their ability to coexist and lead the team.”

Arike Ogunbowale enters the 2025 WNBA season coming off one of the most productive years of her career. She made history by becoming the first player in league history to average at least 20 points and 5 assists per game while also leading the league in steals. The four-time All-Star also led the WNBA in free-throw percentage (.921) and minutes played (38.6), earned All-WNBA Second Team honors, and became the Dallas Wings’ all-time leading scorer.

The Dallas Wings will open their WNBA preseason on Friday against the Las Vegas Aces at Notre Dame’s Purcell Pavilion, where Ogunbowale once shone as a college player. Their growing backcourt partnership will be a central storyline as Dallas begins its 2025 campaign.
