“Rich people don’t have an advantage in the music industry,” says singer Lojay.

Singer Lekan Osifeso Junior, better known as Lojay, recently shared his perspective on the common belief that individuals from wealthy backgrounds have a distinct advantage in the music industry. In an interview with City 105.1 FM in Lagos, Lojay expressed that, contrary to this popular notion, being from a rich background can actually complicate one’s path to success in the Nigerian music scene.

He explained that Nigerians often engage in what he terms “rich-shaming,” targeting those who come from affluent families. According to Lojay, this phenomenon is not exclusive to the music industry; it extends to various aspects of Nigerian society. He pointed out that many people assume that individuals with financial privilege already have an unfair advantage and thus do not deserve much support or recognition for their efforts. “If anything, they come into the music industry at a disadvantage,” he remarked, emphasizing that the perception of wealth can lead to skepticism and bias against rich kids trying to make their mark in music.

When the interviewer asked Lojay if he had ever personally experienced this kind of bias, he confidently asserted his undeniable talent. “They can’t try that with me. Let them challenge me on the mic,” he declared, underscoring his belief in his own abilities as a musician.

Lojay further elaborated on his journey, stating, “Mine was an inevitable situation. I heard myself before I decided to be an artist. I didn’t deceive myself.” He clarified that he has never resorted to payola, nor did his family use their wealth to manipulate the industry into accepting his music. In his view, his affluent upbringing has not provided any significant advantages; instead, he feels it may have posed challenges in gaining acceptance in the competitive landscape of Nigerian music. Ultimately, Lojay’s insights challenge the stereotype that wealth guarantees success in the industry, highlighting the importance of talent and perseverance.
