Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are known for their lasting Hollywood romance — but it’s their sweet, food-focused family tradition that may surprise fans.
In a new interview with People, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star opened up about the unique travel ritual she and her husband share with their children: booking a local cooking class in every country they visit.
“We always, always do a cooking class when we travel,” Gellar said, adding that it’s a cherished way for their family to explore other cultures.
Cooking Their Way Around the World
Gellar and Prinze Jr., who share daughter Charlotte Grace and son Rocky James, have made it a point to incorporate food into their global adventures. They’ve taken hands-on culinary lessons in Italy, Bali, Spain, and beyond.
“We learned how to make pasta from scratch in a woman’s home in Tuscany,” Gellar recalled. “We did pizza classes in a woman’s apartment in Florence. We’ve done cooking classes in Bali and Spain… it’s our favorite thing to do.”
For Gellar, who said she “couldn’t afford to travel very much” as a child, these experiences are about more than food — they’re a meaningful way to bond as a family while learning about the world.
A Love Story Cooked Up in the Kitchen
Before they were parents, food was also what first connected Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. back when they met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
“I just wanted to be friends with her because I thought she was too skinny and I wanted to cook for her,” Prinze Jr. joked in a past interview. “That’s what my family does.”
That casual friendship turned romantic after a series of at-home barbecues, followed by a dinner that sealed the deal.
“She ate everything,” Prinze Jr. shared. “Including a crab that walked across the counter, was dropped into oil alive, and she still tried it. I was impressed.”
Gellar Admits She’s No Chef — But Loves the Experience
Despite their culinary enthusiasm, Gellar insists she’s not professionally trained. In fact, she admitted during her MyFitnessPal partnership that she didn’t even know how to boil water earlier in life.
Still, she believes that food is the gateway to understanding cultures, making their global cooking class tradition even more meaningful.
“When I go to different places, I want to soak in as much as I can,” Gellar said. “And one of the best ways to learn about cultures is how they eat.”
23 Years Strong, With Shared Passions
Now married for over two decades, Gellar and Prinze Jr. often credit their success to both separate bathrooms — and shared interests like food and travel.
From a teenage thriller set to a long-running marriage filled with family cooking adventures, it’s clear that for this Hollywood couple, the recipe for lasting love is full of flavor.
