Selma Blair Says She's 'Truly Relapse-Free' After 7-Year Battle with MS

Selma Blair has shared a hopeful and positive health update regarding her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), revealing that she is “truly relapse-free” after a seven-year struggle with the chronic autoimmune disease.

The 52-year-old actress, who first publicly disclosed her MS diagnosis in 2018, told People magazine that she has been feeling great for about a year now. “I am doing amazingly well,” Blair shared. “But I am finally well enough to really, genuinely… I always try and feel my best, but now that I actually have stamina and energy and getting out and going out isn’t so scary.”

Blair, best known for her roles in Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions, expressed how her improved health is helping her focus more on the future. “It’s funny. I haven’t spent enough time having dreams. And now it’s like, ‘What are my dreams?’” she explained. “I think maybe since the diagnosis… you’re just tired all the time. I spent so much of my life so tired from being unwell that I think I just was trying to get through the day. And now it’s like, ‘Wait, I realize I don’t know what my goals are.'”

Now that her health is stabilizing, Blair’s career plans are more focused. She revealed that she’s eager to return to acting and already has some projects lined up. Variety reported in January that Blair will be making her acting comeback in three upcoming films: Stay Forte (a drama about the Israel-Hamas war), the supernatural thriller Silent, and There There, a film about twin brothers directed by real-life twins Michael and Mark Polish.

In addition to acting, Blair is venturing into writing. She plans to author a young adult book in the fantasy genre.

Since her diagnosis, Blair has been an outspoken advocate for people living with chronic illness. She said she intends to continue raising awareness, helping others navigate life with chronic diseases, and inspiring them to redefine what “getting better” can look like.

Blair has also been candid about her experience with MS, having initially shared her diagnosis in an emotional 2018 Instagram post. In that post, she acknowledged the challenges of living with MS, including memory fog, physical difficulties, and the need for assistive devices like a cane. “I have #multiplesclerosis. I am in an exacerbation,” she wrote at the time. “But we are doing it. And I laugh and I don’t know exactly what I will do precisely but I will do my best.”

Blair, who underwent stem cell transplantation in 2021 to treat her MS, has been in remission since then, marking a significant step in her ongoing recovery.

Blair’s journey, including her 2021 documentary Introducing Selma Blair, continues to inspire both fans and others facing chronic illness.
