Sen. Jon Ossoff Signals Support for Trump Impeachment, Calls President's Actions "Impeachable"

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.) has signaled his support for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, stating that the president’s conduct “has already exceeded any prior standard for impeachment.” Speaking at a town hall near Atlanta on Friday, Ossoff criticized Trump for allegedly using his position to sell access, referencing recent reports where Trump granted audiences to individuals purchasing his meme coin.

“I mean, I saw just 48 hours ago, he is granting audiences to people who buy his meme coin,” Ossoff said. “When the sitting president of the United States is selling access for what are effectively payments directly to him, there is no question that that rises to the level of an impeachable offense.”

While the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment, Ossoff’s remarks have added fuel to ongoing discussions within the Democratic Party about the potential for a third Trump impeachment.

Calls for Impeachment from Democrats Intensify

The comment came in response to a question from a town hall attendee who expressed frustration with the lack of action from Democrats regarding Trump’s conduct. The attendee urged Ossoff and other Democratic leaders to take action, stating, “Do more. I like you and I will vote for you if you are brave, and you do what we need. We need him impeached, we need him removed.”

In response, Ossoff expressed strong agreement, stating that he “strongly” supported impeachment but highlighted the current political reality. He explained that impeachment would only be feasible with a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. “The only way to achieve what you want to achieve is to have a majority United States House of Representatives,” he said. “And believe me, I’m working on it every single day, every single day.”

Trump’s Defiance of Court Orders Cited as Another Impeachable Offense

Ossoff also raised concerns over Trump’s defiance of federal court orders, though he did not specify which case he was referencing. This remark aligns with recent Democratic claims that Trump ignored a Supreme Court order requiring his administration to “facilitate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran native deported to El Salvador despite the order.

The senator’s comments add to the growing list of impeachment proponents within the Democratic Party. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) and Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) are among those who have publicly backed impeaching Trump again during his second term, citing his disregard for the law and the Supreme Court‘s rulings.

Republican Pushback: Ossoff’s Remarks Criticized

The National Republican Senatorial Committee quickly condemned Ossoff’s remarks, accusing him of attempting to “overturn the will of Georgia voters who just elected President Trump.” Republicans remain firmly opposed to impeachment efforts, with the House and Senate currently under GOP control, making any impeachment proceedings unlikely unless the political balance shifts after the 2026 midterm elections.

Impeachment Challenges and Democratic Support

While Trump has already been impeached twice during his first term, he was acquitted by the Senate on both occasions. Should a third impeachment effort move forward, it would require majority support in the House and a two-thirds majority in the Senate — a challenge that currently seems insurmountable due to the Republican majority.

However, the growing support for impeachment reflects the widespread frustration among Democratic voters, who are calling for more aggressive action against Trump’s controversial actions. A recent NBC News poll revealed that nearly two-thirds of Democrats prefer their party leaders to stick to their positions even if it means sacrificing bipartisan progress with Trump.
