Former Super Eagles defender Taiye Taiwo has sent a strong message of encouragement to Nigeria’s U-20 national team, popularly known as the Flying Eagles, ahead of the upcoming Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON), urging the young stars to be fearless and determined in their quest for continental glory.
Taiwo, who himself rose to prominence as a teenager representing Nigeria at youth tournaments, shared his thoughts while speaking to journalists in Lagos on Friday. Reflecting on his personal experiences and the pressures of wearing the Nigerian jersey on the continental stage, he encouraged the players to embrace the challenge with confidence and pride.
“I want to tell the Flying Eagles that they should not be afraid of anyone,” Taiwo said. “They are representing a great nation with a proud football history. They should believe in themselves, play with courage, and not let fear hold them back.”
The Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, scheduled to kick off in a few weeks, serves not just as a prestigious competition but also as a crucial pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Nigeria, a record seven-time U-20 AFCON champion, will once again enter the tournament with high expectations from fans and stakeholders.
Taiwo, who famously captained Nigeria at youth level before making the step up to the senior team, stressed the importance of mentality and self-belief. “Talent alone is not enough at tournaments like this,” he added. “You have to have the right mindset. You must be ready to fight for every ball, defend the flag with your heart, and seize your moment when it comes.”
Drawing from his experience at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where Nigeria finished as runners-up to Argentina, Taiwo explained how unity and resilience propelled his team through difficult moments. He advised the current squad to stick together, stay focused, and never lose sight of their collective goal.
“Back then, we had a strong bond. We fought for each other on the pitch. There were tough matches, tough opponents, but because we trusted one another, we achieved great things. This team can do the same if they stay united and fearless,” he said.
The Flying Eagles, under the guidance of head coach Ladan Bosso, have been intensifying their preparations with rigorous training sessions and friendly matches. Bosso has been working on instilling discipline, tactical awareness, and a winning mentality in the players, many of whom are seeking to use the tournament as a platform to launch their professional careers.
Taiwo praised the technical crew for their efforts and encouraged the players to trust the process. “Coach Bosso knows what he is doing. He has experience, and he understands what it takes to succeed at this level. The players must listen, learn quickly, and give everything for the team.”
He also appealed to Nigerian fans to rally behind the team, regardless of the results. “These boys are young, and they need all the support they can get. It’s not easy to carry the expectations of millions, especially at their age. We must encourage them, pray for them, and let them know that we believe in them.”
The draw for the U-20 AFCON has placed Nigeria in a challenging group alongside strong contenders, but Taiwo insists that no team should intimidate the Flying Eagles. “Respect everyone, but fear no one,” he emphasized. “If they play with heart, discipline, and pride, I am confident they can go all the way.”
Taiwo, who enjoyed a successful club career in Europe with notable spells at Olympique Marseille, AC Milan, and Dynamo Kyiv, remains passionate about the development of youth football in Nigeria. He expressed optimism that the next generation of Nigerian stars could shine brightly if given the right opportunities and guidance.
“This tournament is a big opportunity for them,” Taiwo concluded. “The world will be watching. This is their time to announce themselves, just like many of us did years ago. I wish them the very best, and I believe they will make Nigeria proud.”
With Taiwo’s inspiring words ringing in their ears, the Flying Eagles now set their sights on making history once again. As the countdown to the U-20 AFCON continues, the message from one of Nigeria’s finest left-backs is clear: fear no one, and believe in the greatness that lies within.
