Veteran Fuji musician, General Kollington Ayinla, has opened up about a perceived snub from fellow Fuji icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam1 or K1 De Ultimate, following the death of Kwam1’s mother. In a recent interview, Kollington revealed that despite making several efforts to reach out and commiserate with Kwam1 after the passing of his mother, the calls went unanswered.
Kollington Ayinla, who played a pivotal role in shaping Fuji music in Nigeria alongside the late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, expressed his disappointment at being shut out by someone he once considered family. The 71-year-old music veteran said his intention was purely out of respect and sympathy, not publicity, and he felt deeply hurt by the lack of acknowledgment from Kwam1.
“I called him many times after I heard the news of his mother’s death. It is only natural to express condolences during such times. But he didn’t pick up my calls, not once. I tried to reach him, but he did not respond,” Kollington said.
The Fuji legend, who has also mentored and inspired many contemporary Fuji artistes, emphasized that he wasn’t seeking attention but simply fulfilling a cultural and moral obligation. “I didn’t want to make noise about it. I just wanted to console him, one man to another, and especially as someone who understands what losing a mother feels like,” he added.
Kwam1’s mother, Alhaja Halimat Aduke, passed away in early 2023 and was buried in accordance with Islamic rites. Her death drew condolences from fans and celebrities across the country. While tributes poured in from political figures, entertainers, and well-wishers, some close figures in the Fuji music world, including Kollington Ayinla, claimed to have been ignored or sidelined during the mourning period.
This development has once again brought attention to the often-reported, though sometimes denied, tensions within the Fuji music scene — particularly among its pioneers and top-tier artists. Over the years, reports of rivalry, ego clashes, and generational misunderstandings have characterized relationships between leading Fuji musicians.
Although Kollington did not state any specific reason why Kwam1 may have avoided his calls, many speculate that lingering personal issues or professional disagreements might be at the root of the silence. Both musicians have had a complex history. While they have shared stages and supported each other in various capacities, there have also been instances of rumored disputes and rivalry, fueled by fans and industry insiders alike.
Despite the apparent snub, Kollington maintained a tone of maturity and respect, stating that he harbors no ill will toward Kwam1. “He has his reasons, maybe. But I know I did what I should do. My conscience is clear. I have no bitterness in my heart. I still wish him well,” he concluded.
Fans and industry observers have expressed mixed reactions to Kollington’s revelation. While some see it as an unfortunate but common scenario among aging music icons, others believe it highlights a need for reconciliation and unity in the Fuji music industry.
“There is too much pride and too many factions in Fuji music these days,” one music critic noted. “The veterans, especially those who built this genre from the ground up, should be leading by example — showing the younger generation that respect, tradition, and camaraderie are not outdated values.”
Efforts to get a response from Kwam1 or his media team have so far proven unsuccessful. The singer has made limited public comments since the passing of his mother, and he has not addressed Kollington’s recent claims.
Meanwhile, fans continue to hope that both legends can put aside differences — whether personal or professional — and embrace the unity that their shared history in Fuji music calls for. The genre, which remains a powerful voice for Yoruba culture and identity, has often thrived on healthy competition. But observers argue that at this stage in their careers, the icons of Fuji should be more focused on legacy and mentorship rather than rivalry.
As the story continues to generate discussions within the entertainment industry, it remains to be seen whether Kwam1 will respond to Kollington’s statement or if any reconciliation efforts will follow.
