“Trump’s Comeback Poses a Threat to Freedoms – Human Rights Watch”

Human Rights Watch has warned that the return of US President-elect Donald Trump to the White House next week poses a threat to freedoms both domestically and globally. The rights group cautioned that his second term could be more harmful than his first.

Tirana Hassan, Executive Director of the New York-based independent organization, made these remarks on Thursday as part of the release of its World Report, which reviews human rights practices in over 100 countries.

Hassan stated that the first term of the Trump administration revealed its disregard for human rights, and with Project 2025 and statements from the incoming President, it is already clear that there will be a direct attack on migrant rights.

Hassan, an Australian lawyer with experience representing asylum seekers, also warned that the approach taken by Trump’s administration could embolden authoritarian leaders worldwide to enact repressive policies.

Additionally, she criticized outgoing President Joe Biden’s decision to provide arms to Israel amid the Gaza conflict, claiming there was clear evidence these weapons were being used in atrocities.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was announced on Wednesday.
