UNILAG Student Completes 130km Catwalk, Awaits Guinness World Record Confirmation

Ololade Ayelabola, a final-year Computer Science student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has officially set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance walked on a catwalk by a model. Between October 1 and October 5, 2024, Ololade walked an impressive 125.11 km (77.74 miles) over four days at the UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre, completing 2,058 laps. Her achievement has now been officially verified by Guinness World Records.

Initially aiming to walk 120 km, Ololade surpassed her target, demonstrating remarkable determination and focus. Her record-breaking walk was more than just a personal milestone; it was a statement against stereotypes in the fashion industry. Having faced rejection from fashion shows due to her height, she used this platform to challenge rigid beauty standards and promote inclusivity.

“I’m not walking for myself alone,” she said. “I’m walking for the many models who have been limited by stereotypes and standards set by rigid systems. I’m also walking to showcase the creativity of the Nigerian fashion industry.”

Throughout the event, Ololade modeled outfits from various Nigerian designers, ranging from casual wear to traditional attire, further highlighting the diversity and creativity of Nigerian fashion. Her remarkable feat has not only set a new global standard but also inspired conversations about inclusivity and representation in the fashion world.
