Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88, world leaders—including President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump—are set to attend his funeral in Vatican City on Saturday, April 26. However, King Charles III will not be among them due to royal protocol, with Prince William attending on behalf of the British monarchy.
Why Can’t King Charles Attend a Pope’s Funeral?
According to royal expert Katie Nicholl, Buckingham Palace confirmed that “the Sovereign does not attend funerals,” including papal funerals, based on long-standing British royal protocol and precedence. This tradition ensures that a future monarch, not the reigning one, represents the crown at such international religious events.
This isn’t unprecedented—Prince Charles (now King Charles) attended the 2005 funeral of Pope John Paul II in place of Queen Elizabeth II, even delaying his wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles to do so.
Prince William to Attend the Vatican Funeral
Prince William’s attendance continues the tradition of heirs attending significant global events in the monarch’s stead. It also reflects the prince’s growing role in diplomatic and state affairs as heir apparent.
Charles Honors the Pope Despite Absence
Though absent, King Charles issued a moving statement following Pope Francis’ death, calling him a leader of “compassion” and “unity,” and honoring his commitment to both faith and climate advocacy. The monarch, who met Pope Francis earlier this month during a state visit to Italy, is said to have written to the pontiff privately when his health worsened.
“His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his concern for the unity of the Church… and for his tireless commitment to the common causes of all people of faith,” the King stated.
Royal Protocol and Religious Tradition
As Supreme Governor of the Church of England, King Charles leads the denomination that separated from the Catholic Church in 1534, adding additional layers of sensitivity and tradition to such international events.
