In a remarkable display of youthful innovation, a 17-year-old student from Uttar Pradesh has developed an AI-powered robot capable of teaching students, a project that has captured the attention of social media and educators alike. The robot, named Sophie, has been designed by Aditya Kumar, a 12th-grade student from Shiv Charan Inter College in Bulandshahr, and is equipped with an advanced LLM (Large Language Model) chipset—the same type of technology employed by leading robotics companies.
A video shared on social media shows Sophie interacting with students, answering questions on various subjects, and demonstrating its teaching abilities. When asked to introduce itself, the robot stated, “I am an AI teacher robot. My name is Sophie, and I was invented by Aditya. I teach at Shiv Charan Inter-college, Bulandshahr… Yes, I can properly teach students.” The demonstration included Sophie answering questions about general knowledge, historical figures, science concepts, and even performing simple arithmetic calculations, such as solving the sum of 100 + 92.
Aditya Kumar explained the development process, saying that he used an LLM chipset to give Sophie the ability to understand and respond to students’ queries. “I have used an LLM chipset to build this robot, which is also used by big companies that make robots. It can clear students’ doubts,” he said. While the robot currently speaks only in Hindi, Kumar is working to enhance its capabilities, including enabling it to write responses in addition to speaking them.
The young inventor highlighted the importance of access to proper research facilities for students. “There should be a lab in every district so students can come there and do research,” he said, emphasizing that such facilities could help foster innovation and hands-on learning across India.
Sophie is designed to function as a substitute teacher when a human instructor is unavailable, demonstrating not only AI’s potential to support education but also the ingenuity of young innovators in addressing practical problems. In the video, Kumar tested Sophie by asking it questions about India’s first president and prime minister, the world’s tallest building, and fundamental science topics such as electricity, all of which the robot answered accurately.
