2026: Tension in Osun PDP ahead of governorship primary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State is facing uncertainty over whether Governor Ademola Adeleke will secure the party’s nomination for the 2026 governorship election, amid a lingering factional crisis at the national level.

The dispute involves factions aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesome Wike, and Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, who influence the National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu. The feud over the party’s national convention has led the court to bar INEC from recognising the planned convention, resulting in both factions suspending themselves.

This situation has raised concerns among PDP members in Osun, as the state chapter is largely loyal to the Damagun faction.

“We are afraid that Adeleke may not be properly nominated during the governorship primary fixed for December because of this ongoing crisis that never ends,” said Wale Adegbite, a PDP leader in Osogbo.

Another party source, who asked not to be named, added that Adeleke is associated with the Makinde faction, while the Wike faction in Osun could back another candidate, potentially complicating the legitimacy of the PDP ticket in 2026.

Despite these concerns, PDP state chairman, Sunday Bisi, reassured the public that the crisis would not affect Adeleke’s nomination or the party’s activities:

“The court decision in no way impedes the smooth running of the PDP’s administrative or political activities, either at the national or state level. I can assure our supporters that all ongoing political processes, including the nomination procedures for the governorship ticket in Osun State, remain fully on course.”

The governorship primary is set for December 2025, and party members are urged to remain calm as the national and state structures work through the ongoing factional challenges.
