Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has strongly defended his endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He emphasized that his support was a legitimate exercise of his democratic rights and an affirmation of his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Kalu stressed that his political stance is grounded in a commitment to national unity and development, rather than personal gain or ambition.
In a detailed statement from Kalu’s office, signed by George Maduka, the senator made it clear that his endorsement of Tinubu, along with his push for a strong APC governorship candidate in Abia State, was not politically motivated but driven by his dedication to South-East interests and promoting national cohesion. Kalu also highlighted his legislative record, which includes efforts to bring federal projects to Abia State, in addition to advocating for South-East political interests on a broader national stage.
However, the senator’s position has drawn criticism, particularly from Abia State Governor Alex Otti, who Kalu claims reacted in a vitriolic manner to his public endorsement of Tinubu. Kalu accused Otti of resorting to “gutter politics” rather than focusing on governance. According to Kalu, the governor’s comments were politically desperate and lacked substance, focusing instead on personal attacks rather than constructive discourse on governance.
Kalu Criticizes Otti’s Response
The senator dismissed the governor’s response to his endorsement, describing Otti’s words as “unbecoming of a sitting governor.” The statement rejected the idea that Kalu’s political stance amounted to a declaration of war and emphasized that such political disagreements are common in democratic systems.
Kalu’s office further accused Governor Otti of hypocrisy, pointing out that while Otti had emerged as governor through partisan mobilization under the Labour Party (LP), he now criticizes others for openly supporting their political parties. The statement noted that this was a contradiction, as Otti had once relied on his party’s support but now decries party loyalty from others.
In what appeared to be a counterattack, Kalu’s office criticized the governor for using divine rhetoric to justify his political authority while downplaying the role of opposition parties in holding the government accountable. The statement also suggested that Otti’s criticism may stem from a growing momentum for the APC in Abia State and increasing public dissatisfaction with unfulfilled promises made during the governor’s tenure.
Focus on Governance
Kalu urged Governor Otti to shift his focus back to governance, advising him to concentrate on addressing issues like healthcare, youth unemployment, and security—critical areas where Abia residents are facing challenges. Rather than engaging in political confrontations, Kalu’s office called on the governor to prioritize development over personal vendettas.
The statement also referenced Kalu’s electoral history, asserting that he had never shied away from political contests and that his political victories are public record. The senator challenged Otti to engage the electorate on the basis of performance, rather than relying on rhetoric or political attacks.
APC’s Vision for Abia State
The statement concluded by reaffirming Kalu’s belief in APC’s vision for Abia State, which it stressed was not about political conquest but about offering an alternative vision of governance. The senator urged Otti to avoid resorting to name-calling and instead focus on leading the state in a manner that addresses the needs of the people.
Kalu’s message was clear: “Time is running out for effective leadership,” and Abians deserve a government based on performance and development, not personal vendettas or party politics.
