‘Why Unions Must Adopt New Engagement Strategies’ – ATSSSAN Aspirant

Comrade John Ogbe, a National Presidential aspirant for the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), has urged aviation unions to adopt modern strategies in engaging the federal government, its agencies, and private-sector employers, moving away from industrial unrest toward solution-driven negotiations.

Ogbe emphasized that dialogue-based, facts-driven negotiations can create a win-win scenario for all stakeholders in the already challenged air transport sector.

Speaking on his plans to introduce a paradigm shift in union operations, Ogbe stressed that collaboration, cooperation, capacity building, and a deep understanding of modern conflict-resolution trends should become the new standard for labour unions in the aviation industry.

He acknowledged the contributions of current ATSSSAN leaders but noted that gaps in addressing recurring challenges make a new approach essential. “Our team will engage government differently through solution-based unionism, ensuring negotiations are backed by facts and advocacy that considers all perspectives,” he said.

Ogbe outlined plans to revitalize union activities through dialogue, consultation, and collaboration to foster trust and create an enabling environment. He further said the team would employ lobbying and advocacy to promote staff welfare while maintaining open communication channels with the 17 organizations operating in the aviation sector.

“The new order for labour leaders is to offer solutions, demonstrate capacity, and understand issues during negotiations so that we earn the respect and cooperation of government and employers,” he explained.

On the proposed concession of airport terminals, Ogbe expressed optimism, stating that unions, including ATSSSAN, are working with the Federal Government to ensure fair models that benefit the country, aviation workers, and relevant stakeholders.

“Our strategy will focus on improving work environments, providing solutions at the negotiation table, and collaborating to solve industry challenges,” he added.

Ogbe also pledged to train and equip union members with modern negotiation and conflict-resolution skills, ensuring no member is left behind. He reaffirmed his commitment to securing all outstanding entitlements for rightful beneficiaries, saying:

“Justice delayed must no longer be justice denied.”
