Okoroji Explains Why Actor-Producers Dominate Nollywood

Filmmaker Chima Okoroji, popularly known as Chimex, has shed light on the shifting dynamics in Nollywood, where actor-producers are becoming dominant forces in the industry.

According to Okoroji, actors who have transitioned into producing wield significant influence over film productions, often overshadowing traditional producers. This shift is reshaping Nollywood’s creative and business landscape.

“There are two types of producers in Nollywood: traditional producers and actor-producers,” Okoroji explained. “Actor-producers, created by viewers who have made them stars, dictate how productions are run. They produce their own movies and even films for fellow actor-producers, leaving traditional producers waiting.”

Okoroji highlighted the challenges this creates: producers often face delays and dismissive attitudes from actor-producers, and many have been forced out of the market. Attempts to introduce new talent are also hindered by audiences’ preference for familiar faces.

“Some producers have even taken to featuring in their own films to establish themselves as actors, simply to remain relevant,” Okoroji added.

This evolving structure underscores the power of star influence in Nollywood and the increasing importance of blending creative talent with production control.
