Haryana DGP OP Singh Advocates ‘No Humiliation’ Approach to Gurugram Nightlife

Gurugram, Haryana: Haryana police chief OP Singh has called for a more empathetic approach to policing Gurugram’s nightlife, suggesting ways to curb drunken driving without embarrassing patrons. Speaking after a meeting with senior district officers on Saturday, Singh emphasised that the city’s nightlife is a global reality and should be managed with courtesy and professionalism.

“For example, talk to the restaurant owner. If four people are drinking, only three could be served alcohol, or the owner could advise them to take an Uber home,” Singh explained. He proposed that restaurants could alert police when all patrons have been drinking, allowing officers to ensure safe transport without public humiliation.

Singh highlighted Gurugram’s status as a “magnet city” attracting single working professionals. “Their friends are their family. When they finish work on a Friday, they will go to a club, do whatever they do. This happens globally. Please, don’t harass them when they are returning,” he said.

While condemning drunken driving as “absolutely unforgivable,” Singh emphasised that policing should focus on prevention, not embarrassment. He suggested using surveillance cameras effectively and collaborating with establishments to provide safe transport for patrons.

On police conduct, Singh shared his mantra for officers: “Every officer on the field represents the entire force. Begin with courtesy, conduct the check, and thank them. Politeness doesn’t make you weak; it earns respect.”

Under his guidance, Gurugram police are partnering with nightlife businesses to ensure public safety. Singh said notices are being issued under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, empowering police to act proactively against potential offences rather than merely reacting after crimes occur.

“Our policing must match the vibrancy, youth, and energy of Gurugram. Nightlife brings unique challenges, but with courtesy, empathy, and professional integrity, we can ensure safety while respecting people’s dignity,” he added.
