Warri–Itakpe Train Derails Again in Kogi, Passengers Rescued Safely

Passengers were safely rescued after a Warri–Itakpe train derailed on Sunday in Adogo community, Ajaokuta Local Government Area, Kogi State.

The Kogi State Police Command confirmed the incident. CSP William Ovye-Aya, the Police Public Relations Officer, said all passengers were evacuated to the Ajaokuta train station and assisted in continuing their journeys without any casualties.

“The police acted promptly after receiving a distress call about the derailment. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Kankarofi, immediately deployed officers to the scene to provide security cover for the affected passengers,” Ovye-Aya said.

The Commissioner personally visited the site to assess the situation, meeting with officials from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and some passengers. Additional security personnel were deployed to safeguard lives, property, and railway infrastructure.

The derailment comes less than a week after the NRC resumed the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) following a previous incident near Agbor, Delta State, which had halted operations for weeks.

NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa confirmed that two suspected vandals, aged 27 and 39, had been arrested for tampering with clips and fasteners on the track that caused the earlier derailment. Preliminary investigations and confessional statements revealed their involvement in sabotaging the railway.

“The suspects will face prosecution for endangering public safety and sabotaging national infrastructure,” Opeifa said, commending the swift response of railway police and local security networks.

Amid rising concerns over railway safety, the Senate recently constituted an ad hoc committee to investigate the increasing frequency of train derailments across Nigeria.
