The Nigerian Army has clarified the presence of its personnel at a collation centre in Awka South Local Government Area during the Anambra State governorship election, following a viral video that raised concerns of military interference in the electoral process.
The video showed an army officer being questioned by the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, prompting speculation that the military was attempting to influence the election.
However, a statement signed by Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters 82 Division, Enugu, explained that the soldiers were responding to a distress call from NYSC members and INEC staff who were reportedly held hostage by suspected political thugs after the unexplained disappearance of a collation officer.
“Despite the provocation and tension at the scene, Nigerian Army troops maintained utmost professionalism and restraint, successfully rescuing the corps members and INEC officials. The rescued personnel were subsequently escorted safely to the INEC office, where collation continued peacefully,” the statement read.
The Army emphasized that its intervention was purely humanitarian and security-focused, aimed at protecting lives and safeguarding the electoral process. Lt. Col. Ayeni also noted that the 82 Division would engage with the Anambra State Government to ensure better coordination in future operations.
Separately, SaharaReporters reported that some police officers providing security during the election were shot by army personnel at a checkpoint along Onisha Road following a dispute. One officer was reportedly shot in the chest, with several others injured.
About 45,000 police personnel were deployed for the November 8, 2025, election, which saw incumbent Charles Soludo of APGA secure 422,664 votes, defeating APC candidate Nicholas Ukachukwu, who received 99,445 votes.
