Thousands of residents in Ibadan, Oyo State, have taken to the streets to protest against the state government’s alleged plans to expand the Ibadan Circular Road corridor, resulting in road blockages and traffic congestion.
The protesters, hailing from communities including Ido, Lagelu, Ona Ara, Akinyele, Oluyole, and Egbeda, are demanding that the government adhere to the original 150-metre plan for the road, which was established during the tenure of Olubadan Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, who was also a former governor of the state.
Eyewitnesses report that demonstrators have blocked Iwo Road—one of the city’s major thoroughfares—and the entrance to the Agodi Government Secretariat, carrying placards and voicing their opposition to the proposed land acquisition.
The protesters argue that the government’s plan to extend the corridor could affect more homes and community lands, sparking anger among residents who insist that the original blueprint should be maintained.
This development has caused significant traffic disruption and highlights growing tension between the state government and local communities over urban development and land acquisition in Ibadan.
