FAAN Orders Immediate Removal of Vehicles from Lagos Airport Road

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has directed the immediate removal of petrol tankers, limousine cabs, and other vehicles parked along the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Road, citing security and safety risks to critical airport infrastructure.

FAAN’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, stated that prior communications with vehicle owners failed to yield compliance, prompting the decision for forceful action if the vehicles are not vacated promptly.

“Parked vehicles and tankers along the airport road pose serious hazards and do not reflect well on the country’s aviation image. We will continue to engage stakeholders, but non-compliance will trigger enforcement,” Kuku said.

Safety Week Focus: Enhancing Airport Security

Mrs. Kuku made the announcement during a briefing ahead of FAAN Safety Week, themed “Navigating Conflicts for a Safer Aviation Industry in Nigeria.” The initiative seeks to improve communication and collaboration among passengers, airlines, and security agencies while raising awareness about prohibited items, hazardous materials, and aviation safety protocols.

She recounted recent incidents at Abuja and Kano airports, where passengers attempted to carry acidic substances and other dangerous goods onboard, highlighting the importance of consistent security training and public awareness.

“Communication is critical. Everyone in the aviation ecosystem must understand the role of each security agency and comply with established procedures to maintain safety,” Kuku emphasized.

Collaboration with Lagos State and Security Agencies

FAAN has also engaged the Lagos State Government, the Tankers Drivers Association, limousine operators, and other stakeholders to clear the airport approach road. The authority has conducted sanitation and awareness exercises to identify offenders and encourage voluntary compliance.

“Our aim is to enhance airport safety, reduce hazards, and improve the overall environment. Those who fail to comply will face forceful removal,” Kuku warned.

Through Safety Week, FAAN aims to equip airport personnel with conflict management, emotional intelligence, and teamwork skills—essential for maintaining passenger safety and a resilient aviation industry.
