Mohbad’s Family Bars Wunmi from Using Surname

The family of the late singer Mohbad has prohibited his widow, Wunmi Adebanjo, from using the Aloba surname pending the outcome of a DNA test to confirm the paternity of their son, Liam.

The move comes amid an ongoing paternity dispute following Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023. Mohbad passed away after receiving an injection from an auxiliary nurse, and his body was later exhumed for an autopsy amid public outcry.

In May 2025, the investigation faced a setback when pathologists reported that the cause of Mohbad’s death could not be determined.

In a recent development, the family head, Omolayo Aloba, in a statement co-signed with Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, officially restricted Wunmi from using the family name.

The statement also noted that no legal or customary marriage was contracted between Mohbad and Wunmi, as the required Yoruba traditional rites (payment of bride price) were never completed.

The family named Oladayo Ogungbe as the sole legal representative for the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate, while Wahab Shittu will continue to handle all matters with investigative authorities regarding his death.

The statement clarified that both Wunmi and her child will be included in the estate administration process only after the DNA test confirms Liam as Mohbad’s biological son.
