A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), operating under the banner of the Progressive and Democratic Stakeholders of the PDP, has urged party members, delegates, and leaders to stay away from Saturday’s national convention in Ibadan.
In a communique issued at the end of a meeting in Abuja, the group argued that proceeding with the convention would violate the rule of law and constitute an act of lawlessness.
Key Leaders Involved
Stakeholders at the Abuja meeting included:
- FCT Minister Nyesom Wike
- Factional Acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman
- Factional Board of Trustees Chairman Mao Ohuabunwa
- National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu
- Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Kingsley Chinda
Rule of Law Central to PDP Stability
The communique emphasized the group’s commitment to lawful conduct and due process, noting that assemblies conducted in defiance of judicial orders have no legitimacy within the PDP.
“Our party can only stand, succeed, and prosper on the solid foundation of respect for the rule of law, not by indulging or enabling actions that undermine it,” the statement read.
The faction criticized the Ibadan convention for being at odds with a Federal High Court ruling and for attempting to bypass unresolved congresses at the state and local government levels, which are still pending before courts.
Call for Party Members to Refrain from Participation
The communique urged all PDP members and stakeholders to avoid any activity, assembly, or process that contradicts lawful directives, reiterating that proceeding with the convention would be “a direct assault on the rule of law and an invitation to disorder within the party.”
The faction reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law, respecting courts, and protecting the integrity of internal party processes as a path toward unity, stability, and long-term success for the PDP.
“By respecting the rule of law, the PDP will not only prevail but also emerge stronger, more cohesive, and better positioned to fulfil its historic mission in Nigeria’s democracy,” the communique concluded.
