Bill Belichick Responds to New York Giants Coaching Rumors, Says He’s ‘Focused’ on UNC Football

Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick is once again at the center of speculation, this time linked to the New York Giants’ head coach vacancy following the firing of Brian Daboll. But despite the chatter, Belichick insists that his attention remains firmly on his current job — leading the University of North Carolina Tar Heels.

During his weekly press conference on Tuesday, Nov. 11, the 73-year-old head coach addressed the growing rumors after several UNC players asked him whether he was considering a return to the NFL.

“I’ve been asked about it from time to time,” Belichick acknowledged before firmly redirecting the conversation. “Look, I’ve been down this road before. I’m focused on Wake Forest, that’s it. That’s my commitment to this team. This week it’s Wake Forest, next week it’s that opponent. I’m here to do the best for this team.”

His comments came just a day after the Giants parted ways with Daboll, immediately sparking speculation about whether Belichick — who previously helped the Giants win two Super Bowls as defensive coordinator — could be eyeing a comeback.

Belichick Dismisses NFL Return Rumors

Belichick’s ties to the Giants run deep. During the 1980s and early 1990s, he served as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells, playing a pivotal role in the team’s 1987 and 1991 Super Bowl victories. His storied NFL career later included 24 seasons with the New England Patriots and six Super Bowl championships.

However, since mutually parting ways with the Patriots in January 2024, Belichick’s name has been floated for almost every NFL coaching vacancy. And each time, he has shut down the speculation.

Just last week, he called rumors about his leaving UNC “a bunch of garbage,” making it clear he isn’t planning to exit his five-year, $10 million-per-season college contract less than a year into the deal.

Belichick’s First Year at UNC Has Been Challenging

Belichick’s transition to the collegiate level has been rocky, with the Tar Heels’ season falling short of expectations. Off-field headlines have added to the pressure, sparked by ongoing scrutiny surrounding his 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson, who has been seen frequently on the sidelines and involved in aspects of his professional life.

Despite the speculation about tension between Belichick and UNC leadership, he has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to the program.

“I’m fully committed to the UNC Football program we’re building here,” he said just weeks ago.

Players Are Curious About His Future — But Belichick Stays Focused

With three games remaining in UNC’s season and a matchup against Wake Forest set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, Belichick is emphasizing stability.

When asked what message he wants to send to his team amid the swirl of reports, he kept it simple:
“My commitment is to this team.”

Belichick’s future has been a topic of constant discussion since leaving the Patriots — but for now, he continues to remain on the college sidelines, shutting down any notion that he’s preparing for an NFL comeback.
