Former heavyweight world champion Joseph Parker could face a suspension after testing positive for a banned substance on the day he fought the United Kingdom’s Fabio Wardley last month, promoter Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions confirmed on November 14, 2025.
Details of the Failed Drug Test
According to Queensberry Promotions, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) notified all relevant parties that Parker returned an adverse finding following an anti-doping test conducted on October 25, the day of his WBO interim heavyweight title bout against Wardley.
“While the matter is investigated further, no additional comment will be made at this time,” the statement added.
The substance reportedly detected was a metabolite of cocaine, according to earlier British media reports. If confirmed, Parker could face a lengthy suspension, similar to previous cases in professional boxing. For example, British fighter Liam Cameron received a four-year ban in 2018 after testing positive for benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite.
Impact on Parker’s Career
The failed test casts a shadow over Parker’s career, which includes winning the WBO heavyweight title in 2016 after defeating Andy Ruiz for the vacant belt. Parker later lost the title to Anthony Joshua in 2018. Most recently, Parker held the WBO interim heavyweight title after defeating China’s Zhang Zhilei in March 2024.
During his bout with Wardley at London’s O2 Arena, Parker was stopped in the 11th round, giving Wardley the right to challenge Ukraine’s undisputed world champion Oleksandr Usyk.
Next Steps and Investigations
The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), which oversees disciplinary actions in UK boxing, will determine the length of any potential ban. Meanwhile, the UK Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) declined to comment, citing standard protocol.
Parker has not yet responded publicly on social media regarding the failed test or potential suspension. Boxing fans and analysts are now awaiting updates on both the disciplinary process and Parker’s future in the sport.
