Alcaraz Clinches Year-End World Number One
Turin, Italy – Spain’s tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz has officially secured the year-end world number one ranking after a commanding 6-4, 6-1 victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti at the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin. The win not only ensured Alcaraz finished at the top of the Jimmy Connors Group, but it also propelled Alex De Minaur into the semifinals following his victory over Taylor Fritz.
By defeating Musetti, Alcaraz simultaneously ended the Italian’s hopes in the season-ending championships and dashed Jannik Sinner’s bid to reclaim the top spot in the ATP rankings, even though Alcaraz himself struggled at times during his third round-robin match.
“The match was really important for me, playing for year-end number one,” Alcaraz said. “It wasn’t easy at the beginning with the nerves. I tried to handle that pressure the best I could, so I’m just really happy with the level I played and to be able to end the year as the number one.”
A Historic Season for Alcaraz
At just 22 years old, Alcaraz has enjoyed the most successful season of his career. He reached the final of three Grand Slams, claiming victories at the French Open and US Open, while narrowly losing the Wimbledon final to Sinner. In total, he captured eight ATP titles in 2025, reinforcing his position as the leading figure in men’s tennis.
Alcaraz’s performance in Turin against Musetti demonstrated his ability to handle high-pressure situations. After breaking Musetti at 5-4 in the first set, Alcaraz dominated the second set, racing to a 6-1 victory.
The Crowd and Court Drama
The Inalpi Arena greeted Musetti and Alcaraz with contrasting reactions. While Musetti received loud cheers from the home crowd, Alcaraz faced initial boos before being met with applause once the match began. Despite 21 unforced errors, Alcaraz maintained composure, showcasing why he is ranked as the world number one.
Musetti initially held his own, winning two service games to love before succumbing in a nerve-jangling 11-minute final game of the first set. The Spaniard then quickly took control, breaking Musetti in successive games to build a decisive lead.
Semifinal Prospects: Alcaraz and Sinner
Alcaraz will now prepare for a semifinal clash against either Alexander Zverev or Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Jannik Sinner, winner of the Bjorn Borg Group, is already through to the other semifinal and could face Alcaraz in a potential rematch.
“This tournament is really important for me,” Alcaraz added. “I’m excited about qualifying for the semifinals and hopefully getting to the final. We will see, part of the job is done, but I’m excited to keep going.”
Alex De Minaur Shines Against Taylor Fritz
Australia’s Alex De Minaur put on a resilient display, bouncing back from two early losses to defeat Taylor Fritz 7-6(3), 6-3. De Minaur’s energetic performance, coupled with Fritz’s inconsistent serving, allowed the Australian to progress into the semifinals.
Despite only winning one round-robin match—the same as Musetti and Fritz—De Minaur benefited from Alcaraz’s victory over Musetti, highlighting the complex permutations in the ATP Finals group stage.
“Is that actually true or not? I don’t know, I don’t trust you right now, I’m gonna have to see what happens,” De Minaur said when learning he had advanced to the semifinals.
De Minaur is set to face Sinner in a high-stakes semifinal matchup, giving tennis fans another thrilling showdown ahead of the championship decider.
Alcaraz Eyes ATP Finals Glory
While Alcaraz has already secured year-end number one, the Spaniard remains focused on winning his first ATP Finals title. His commanding performance against Musetti and consistent success throughout 2025 position him as the clear favorite heading into the semifinals.
With potential rematches against Sinner and showdowns against other top-ranked players like Zverev and Auger-Aliassime, Alcaraz’s journey in Turin is far from over.
