Rajnath Singh Criticises Marxist Historians for Neglecting Dalit and Tribal Contributions in History

Lucknow, Nov 16, 2025: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday criticised Marxist historians and previous governments for deliberately sidelining the contributions of Dalit and tribal communities in India’s freedom struggle, during the unveiling of a statue of Uda Devi Pasi, a celebrated freedom fighter, in Lucknow.

Addressing the gathering, Singh noted that history books have traditionally focused on the roles of only a few prominent families in the independence movement, often overlooking the sacrifices and contributions of marginalized communities. “Dalit, Adivasi [tribal], and Pasi leaders were neglected,” he said, emphasising that these communities played an equally important role in the struggle against colonial rule.

Singh specifically highlighted the contributions of Pasi leaders, asserting that their stories have largely been excluded from mainstream narratives of India’s freedom struggle. He praised the current Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for taking steps to honour such leaders and bringing their stories to public attention.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh was a focal point during the 1857 revolt against the British, with Pasi leaders, including Uda Devi, playing significant roles. He elaborated on measures taken by his government to educate students about the contributions of historically neglected communities. These include the introduction of a dedicated book in primary schools highlighting leaders from the Pasi and other marginalized communities.

Adityanath also noted symbolic gestures to honour these leaders: three women battalions of the Provincial Armed Constabulary have been named after Pasi leaders, including Uda Devi. Additionally, a monument dedicated to the 12th-century Maharaja Bijli Pasi is under construction in Lucknow, further recognising the historical significance of the Pasi community.

By unveiling Uda Devi’s statue, the Defence Minister and Chief Minister emphasised the importance of inclusivity in historical narratives, asserting that the contributions of all communities must be acknowledged to provide a complete understanding of India’s fight for independence.

This move forms part of a broader initiative by the Uttar Pradesh government to recognise the often-overlooked role of Dalits, tribals, and other marginalized communities in shaping the nation’s history.
