Mason Thames Opens Up About “Sounding Like Hiccup” While Filming Black Phone 2

Mason Thames Reflects on Filming Black Phone 2 After How to Train Your Dragon

Rising star Mason Thames, 18, recently shared an amusing behind-the-scenes insight with PEOPLE about his experience filming Black Phone 2 directly after starring as Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon.

Thames revealed that while transitioning from a lighthearted, family-friendly dragon movie to a dark horror sequel, he occasionally slipped into Hiccup’s voice and mannerisms during scenes in Black Phone 2.

“I went from How to Train Your Dragon to Black Phone 2, and that was a process of getting out of Hiccup,” Thames recalled.
“Sometimes I’d talk a little faster than Finney, maybe sounding like Hiccup, and [the director] would just go, ‘I hear Hiccup.’ I was like, ‘Ah, damn. Sorry, sorry.’”

Revisiting the World of Black Phone

Thames also discussed returning to Black Phone, a franchise that first launched his career in 2021. He described reprising his role as Finney as a “crazy” experience, reflecting on the changes in both his acting and personal growth over the past five years.

“Finney is a very complicated character… covered by a shell of the trauma of what happened to him. It was surreal coming back to him,” Thames explained.
“It’s the most fun and challenging, because you really want to break down that character and get to the core of it.”

PEOPLE’s Sexiest New Heartthrob

In addition to his acting achievements, Mason Thames was recently named PEOPLE’s Sexiest New Heartthrob, a title he received with humor and gratitude.

“Hell, yeah, as you should,” he joked, before adding, “I had so many friends text me about it… it’s really great. It’s an honor.”

He also commented on his social media life:

“I don’t check my DMs. There’s probably been some crazy stuff in there.”

Historic Box Office Milestone

2025 has been a monumental year for Thames. He became the first actor since Jim Carrey in 1994 to have three No. 1 films at the box office in a single year. His hit films include:

  1. How to Train Your Dragon (live-action)
  2. Black Phone 2
  3. Regretting You

Reflecting on this accomplishment, Thames said:

“I’m still a bit lost for words… it’s really, really crazy to even be in that conversation.”
