Ray J, also known as William Ray Norwood Jr., is taking legal action against Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner, claiming they breached a $6 million settlement related to the 2003 sex tape he recorded with Kardashian.
The 44-year-old singer filed a response and cross-complaint on November 13, 2025, denying all defamation claims made by Kardashian, 45, and Jenner, 70, in their October lawsuit. Ray J describes the filing as a “public relations charade” filled with “malicious falsehoods” intended to generate publicity and punish him.
“They are furious that Norwood no longer wants to play along with their tall tale,” the filing reads, alleging that the media attention surrounding the case is being used for Kardashian and Jenner’s personal gain.
Ray J is requesting that their lawsuit be dismissed and is seeking $1 million in damages, in addition to interest, attorney fees, and any further relief the court deems just and proper.
Background of the Sex Tape and Settlement
According to Ray J, the sex tape was recorded consensually in 2003, and discussions about releasing it began in 2006. He claims Kardashian insisted that Jenner oversee the tape’s eventual release. Licensing agreements were signed with Vivid Entertainment, which released the video in 2007.
The cross-complaint further alleges that Kardashian, Jenner, and Vivid conspired to create a bogus lawsuit claiming Kardashian did not intend or consent to the release, generating buzz ahead of the tape’s distribution. Ray J claims Kardashian perpetuated a false victim narrative around the tape over the next two decades to drive publicity.
Alleged Breach of Settlement
Ray J alleges that in April 2023, the parties reached a settlement requiring:
- Payment of $6 million to Ray J
- A clause ensuring no further mention or public reference to the sex tape on The Kardashians
- Liquidated damages of $1 million for any future disparagement
He claims Kardashian, Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and Kanye West violated the agreement when they discussed the sex tape on the show’s third season, which premiered in May 2023 — just one month after the settlement. Kardashian and Jenner subsequently tried to modify the agreement to exempt themselves from statements “made but not publicized” before the effective date, a change Ray J rejected.
Defamation Lawsuit and Response
Following the alleged breaches, Kardashian and Jenner filed a defamation lawsuit in October 2025 over public comments Ray J made on TMZ and Twitch, comparing their conduct to RICO charges previously leveled against Sean “Diddy” Combs. Ray J asserts that:
- His Twitch comment was off-camera and unintended to be live-streamed
- His TMZ comment was an aside, not material
- Any claims of breach are excused due to Kardashian and Jenner’s own material breaches
Alex Spiro, attorney for Kardashian and Jenner, dismissed Ray J’s countersuit as a “frivolous case,” stating:
“After realizing he is losing the case and losing his way, this disjointed rambling distraction is not intimidating anyone. Ray J will lose this frivolous case too.”
Ongoing Legal Battle
This countersuit adds another layer to the high-profile legal conflict surrounding one of the most infamous celebrity sex tapes in pop culture history. Ray J’s filing emphasizes that the dispute is about contractual breaches, publicity manipulation, and protection of his business interests, rather than mere defamation.
